So I mentioned last week that Joe had some big secret up his sleeve that he (and everyone in my life that knew about it) were very impressively keeping from me. All I knew was that it could be 4 hours away (maybe just one way maybe both ways) and that we would be spending the night on Saturday. After that, everyone either lied or said nothing lol They really managed it and, to this day, I am so impressed with my hubby that he managed to keep the secret for nearly a month!
My whole birthday started with my mom and I taking Friday off to go see a movie and do a little shopping together. We both were big fans of a book by a MN author named Kent Nerburn called Neither Wolf Nor Dog. And, wouldn’t you know it, that Friday of my birthday the movie made after the book was opening in the town we were going to! So, we got to see that before going to her place with my aunt, Joe, mom and I having my favorite supper, drinks and playing games for several hours. At that point I was literally gnawing at the bit to know where I was going the next day! (A girl really doesn’t realize how much of a control freak she is until everyone puts her in the dark…)
So, we headed out Saturday morning and we ended up in a big city a couple of hours away. Here’s the kicker, my best friend (and cousin) Rachel was texting with me the whole time wanting to be kept up to date. So I’m going back and forth with her, trying to figure out where Joe was taking me totally convinced that I wouldn’t be seeing her (or anyone I knew) until we got back home. We got to a hotel with a bar connected to it and headed upstairs. Joe played it SO cool, he had me convinced that we were meeting a couple of people he had worked with (whom I’ve never met) and I was playing it cool thinking, “Really? We’re going to hang out with YOUR friends who are total strangers to me on MY birthday?” But I always trust him, Joe knows me better then anyone else on the planet and if he thought this couple would be great to hang out with then I believed him.
We got to the hotel room door and there was a Happy Birthday balloon on the handle! I took a picture and was thinking, “Holy crap these folks you worked with must be really cool if they’re gonna do this for me – a person they’ve never even met!”
Rachel opened the door, hugged me, handed me a beer and I cried lol.
Most of you guys know me for the DIY homebody chick that I am now and not for the party girl I used to be a few years ago. Back in the day I couldn’t wait for Friday so I could party and drink! I still miss those times sometimes and, goodness knows, I spent almost all of them with Rachel at my side. But people grow up and I wouldn’t go back to those times but I still look back on them very fondly! So, we partied like it was 2012 lol Minus taking shots (don’t have the constitution for that anymore) and minus shutting the bar down (we’re old and we all got tired) But it was such a blast! We talked about olden days with my cousin piping up, “I’m going to be a grandma in a month!? How does that happen!?” I really don’t know where time flies and that party girl I used to be made her fair share of mistakes but I love her so, she got me here.
Even laying on the couch all day Sunday after we got home, sipping water, waiting to feel like a human being again, it was still one of the best birthdays I’ve ever had. I got to be with everyone I love and even got to party a little like I used to. And, I think its always good for the reminder that, in fact, I really CAN’T party like I used to lol What’s that meme say, “You know you’re getting old when a night out takes more recovery time then minor surgery!” SO TRUE! Like, what are 20-something made of?!
