Major blizzard warning and basement updates

Well, it happened, we have a blizzard on the way 🙁 As I’m typing this (the day before this post will go live) it is 62 degrees with all blue skies and sunshine sunshine sunshine. It is hard to believe that we have a blizzard coming! We’ve been hit by warnings and updates for days now, everybody is just freaking out about it. For the record: no one is surprised, we have not at all forgotten that we do, in fact, live in northern Minnesota. However, it has been almost eight months since we had snow on the ground and this really is shaping up to be one ugly storm. Right now we’re looking at it raining Thursday night turning to sleet turning to what may be 6-15 inches of snow with winds up to fifty miles per hour all day Friday :-O So, yes, that means its gonna get nice and slick with every road totally covered in ice and then snow on top of that to make for just awesome driving conditions. I’ve already planned on parking my car in the garage Thursday night and having my mom get me to go to work that day, she drives a pretty little Rav4 that has a much better chance of driving through eight inches of snow then my car does. Yes, we are all still planning on being open and getting to work on time 🙂

UPDATE: December 15th, 2017. Joe and I are now divorced. I will not be deleting blog posts like this one as it is still a diary to some extent of my past and that still matters to me. I wish I had been more honest about how things were going to you guys here on the blog… I thought things would get better. There was always something: once this happens then he won’t be so angry… But, eventually, he ran out of excuses and I had to face my reality that I was wrong about Joe in every way possible. Grandma’s house is completely mine so now it can actually become what I dreamed it would be on all those late nights alone when I was renovating it. Happiness does not always come the way we expect it to, sometimes it even takes a broken heart to get us there, and I still believe in happy endings!

Meanwhile, in my bird feeder universe, I got so tired of refilling them every two days because of the squirrels that I finally bought corn for them! The first day I just spread it out on the deck and enjoyed the show. So far we have about eight big gray squirrels and they just keep getting bigger. The two biggest ones are already the size of small cats, just look at how tiny his head looks! lol They just sit and gorge themselves all morning and then stumble off for afternoon naps in the closest tree. Turns out the squirrels knew best; they were just preparing for a blizzard. My horses have been acting ravenous as well so I’ve been doubling down on their feed. We also got their hooves trimmed, I got their water tank filled with their tank heater plugged in so it doesn’t freeze and I picked up more feed this morning. As far as I can tell, at least as far as the critters are concerned, we are as prepared as we can get for this.

In my last basement update I had finally finished all of the walls and was struggling to figure out where I wanted everything to be and how to organize it all. I emptied the garage and brought everything down there, threw it on the shelf and ignored it for a couple of days. In the meantime I put my table saw together: a gift from Joe for my birthday in February! I know I know I know, it was awful that I hadn’t yet set it up and got it all put together and my poor husband was definitely thinking I didn’t like his gift. I love the gift, I just didn’t want to put it together and then move it around a thousand times, instead I waited until I really had a place for it. It works great 🙂 I’ve never had my own table saw before! And, thanks to it, I fixed the stairs (sorry no pics of them yet) Meanwhile I also did four coats of sealant on all of the counter tops so they’re done now too!

Last weekend Joe surprised me by coming home with some stone he bought for me just for the back splash down in the basement kitchen! (Can’t wait to show you guys, it looks SO cool!) He started in on that and I did the only thing I could do and couldn’t procrastinate on any more: I went through all of my tools. It was total chaos. So, I can never find a tape measure at all and it turns out I own four. During the renovation we lost more sharpie markers then can be believed, I found eleven of them. I can NEVER find my nice new utility knife I bought just for myself, turned out it was in the pocket of my tool bag… way at the bottom. Yes, it did turn out that I did, in fact, already own two unopened cans of black glossy rustoleum that I couldn’t find the other day so, yes, I have four now.

I honestly did not take pictures when it was at its worse: every bin empty and every single thing I own that belongs down here spread from one end of the floor to the other, I just didn’t think anyone needed to see that. This was before I fixed the stairs too, you can see how bad they were in the top pic. Mostly they were a little unsafe and nerve racking lol they’re not real pretty now but they are finally SAFE. So now we have safe stairs, finished countertops and a totally organized workshop *squeals!!* There are still a TON of things I need to do down here, like a big table/work bench, I still have absolutely no seating and that needs to change, I’m still figuring out where I want more shelves etc. but, mostly, my mind is beginning to turn to the projects I now have a place to work on them and build them and I am so excited I can barely stand it!

So, are Joe and I prepared for this blizzard, for the big storm? Well, we have a wood shed full of wood and all of our work plans for this weekend are in the basement (of course) so, we are ready 🙂 However, Joe has been out of town this week and will be driving home right after this storm hits so, if you could send your prayers and good energy his way Friday night I would really appreciate it! Thank the universe I have a man who is a cautious driver I know he will pull over and wait it out if things get too bad but I am still totally worried about him in every way.
