I AM SO SICK OF PAINTING. I started repainting this entire house back in 2018 and I almost can’t believe it but THIS IS IT! The last space is the closet and bathroom repainting on our second floor. One LAST job. After nearly five years there isn’t just a light at the end of the tunnel anymore. Seriously, I might not want to paint another wall again in my life, but I’m going to thoroughly enjoy this.
For those just joining in: All of the finished spaces in our home needed to be repainted for two reasons. One was my poor choice of painting everything with flat paint initially… but that would have made little to no difference in light of the biggest reason:
I let my ex talk me into an enormous wood stove in the middle of the kitchen and the consequences of him improperly venting it left this entire house terribly smoke damaged. (I threw him out in late 2017 and immediately began work fixing this poor house.)
Here’s our entryway which was so stained it was actually disgusting
and here’s the post of my getting rid of that horrible wood stove
The first floor was damaged the worst so I tackled the entryway, laundry room, kitchen and living room before moving on to the rest of the spaces on our main floor.
Our second floor didn’t suffer near as much from the wood stove which is why this is my last stop in my campaign. So now, with the master bedroom painting done, it was time to tackle the bathroom and closet.
I emptied both spaces and WOW did this bathroom repainting need to happen badly!
(Lodi went to spend a three day weekend with his daughter giving me his side of the bed for all of my clothes lol. I rolled over to cuddle with him that first morning and got an armful of clothes hangers!)
First thing is first though, I’m going to give our floors here a little love.
Its as simple as re-staining (dark walnut by Minwax) any places that were scuffed etc. From there I applied poly acrylic in semi gloss heavily throughout most of the bathroom. The closet floor needed a little bit of touching up as well but not terribly.
The next day (with that dry) I started in on the bathroom repainting.
I ran a layer of blue painter’s tape on the floor along all of the trim in both places before covering the floors with plastic and taping that down as well.
I did all I could with a heavy nap paint roller on the bead board, trim and ceilings before switching to a brush and completing all the white elements in the two spaces.
The bathroom repainting was a lot more tedious than the closet…
As usual the bead board and trim is such a pain in the butt and is absolutely the reason why I am so sick of painting the rooms in this house.
You can see how I didn’t bother taping off the walls for this. I’ll be repainting the walls in the color that’s already there, which is plenty dark enough to cover up any brush over from the trim so that saved me some prep time.
With that done and dry (the next day) I taped all the white off and tackled the walls, repainting the sheet rock in Sooty Lashes by Valspar.
Painting a couple of rooms is really not a big enough deal to devote a whole blog post to it. (You guys all know what its like to paint a room lol.)
But the bathroom repainting alone took me several hours over a couple of days and really I just feel like I deserve a whole post just to say:
IT TOOK ME NEARLY FIVE YEARS BUT I DID IT!
You’ll notice a couple of suspiciously missing elements in my after pictures here…
The shelf above the tub is gone and has big changes in store for it.
The sliding barn door is also gone as the hardware needs to be lowered, the doorway needs to be narrowed and I need to put in a track system (or something…) so it doesn’t beat up the wall anymore.
The vanity is looking rougher by the day and there’s a dip in the floors so its back legs need to be cut off so it actually sits level and flush against the wall.
Not to mention its top badly needs to be refinished!
(The light above the vanity also needs some work too.)
Also, when I was looking at the old pictures of my closet, it got me missing the bench I used to have in there…
We already have three benches that my Grandparents’ built. One is in our entryway storing scarves, gloves, hats etc. The other is in our dining room doubling as seating and storage for dog treats etc. and then the other one is in our guest bedroom for extra blanket storage.
Fortunately all three of them can stay right where they’re at because we just so happen to have another one.
(Apparently my grandparents really liked building storage benches!)
The bench I’ll be bringing up here spent over a decade in our horse barn when I was a kid and came with me when I moved here still filled with horse stuff and then, for several more years, its been out in a shed…
Lodi helped me grab it one day and its been waiting for me in the workshop ever since because it needs some serious attention.

It always feels so great when a tedious job is finally finished; great job, Tarah!
Thank you Jeannie!
What an accomplishment!!! Way to go!
Thank you Erin!!
Holy cow what a project! I totally sympathize with having to deal with an old home. You have to deal with your own mistakes as well as those of previous owners. The end result was worth it, though!
Looking forward to seeing what happens with that shelf.
Thank you Lydia, I am so glad to have this space finally repainted!
Wonderful job! I feel exhausted just reading what you have done over the years.
Thank you Phyllis!
