There are no definitive rules when it comes to decor and furniture for any room in the house. Every home, every space, and all our families are a little bit different, and we all have different needs from a space. Picking out bedroom furniture and decor is probably my favorite room to have a little fun in. Probably because a bedroom can truly JUST cater to whoever lives in it so, there really are no rules! Unlike the rest of the house that also has to cater to guests! However, a few general guidelines are always important to follow.

A few simple guidelines can help you plan and decorate any space, however, and help you maximize your style and create innovative storage options. Whatever you need from your bedroom, here are some of the do’s and don’ts of picking out bedroom furniture and choosing your decor.
DO! – Pull Furniture Away from The Walls
No matter what style of bedroom furniture you choose, don’t stick it in corners or close to walls. You can really show off a room’s space by pulling the furniture away from a wall. If you have particularly decorative furniture, this is even more effective.
DON’T! – Rely on Large Overhead Lighting
The lighting of a room does a lot to set the tone and atmosphere of a room, and this is especially important in a bedroom. You may already have bedside lamps picked out for reading, but you should also choose floor or table lamps for the rest of the room to give you lighting options.
DO! Choose Rugs
Even if your floor is carpeted, you should choose one or more rugs to add some depth and texture to your room. You can also use it as a way to designate or separate areas in your room.
DON’T! – Forget About Vertical Storage Space
You may have a bookcase or some shelves on a wall to use up some vertical storage space, but don’t be afraid to take it a step or two further. Having a storage cabinet disguised as a matching wardrobe is a great little hack if you have a lot of stuff. Bookworms can have one long shelf around the perimeter of the room, above door height, making a decorative feature out of their book collection.
DO! – Choose Luxurious Materials and Fabrics
The bedroom is the perfect place to spoil yourself a little, and by choosing more luxurious fabrics, like deeper pile carpets and thick velvet bed covers, you can create a more relaxing and welcoming space to retire to at night.
DON’T! – Have a Plain White Ceiling
Many people make the mistake of painting their ceilings plain white thinking this will be good for reflecting the light throughout the room. It actually creates a stark and uncomfortable tone for a bedroom. Choose a slightly lighter shade than what you have used on your walls for a better look, as well as good light distribution.
DO! – Get a Bigger Bed
One of the best things you can do for a bedroom is get a large, high quality mattress and bed frame for its inhabitants to sleep on. When it comes to beds, it is always better to get a big one that you can sprawl out on and lounge on through the day.
DON’T! – Hang Curtains
Many bedrooms have curtains that hang above the window and are drawn together at night. This is an outdated and expensive look. Get drapes that cover the sides of the window, and pair them with a rolling or Venetian blind to block the light out at night. This is much more effective and cheaper, and opens up a wider range of materials and color options for your window decor.
Whatever your chosen color palette, or whatever materials you are choosing to work with, these simple do’s and don’ts should help you choose a welcoming and relaxing decor for your bedroom, with furniture to match!
