It may have taken ten years but the room I designed to be an office is finally my office and this room, the room that was always meant to be a guest bedroom, is finally my guest bedroom. For those who have been following along you know this all started back when I was trying to make a guest bedroom out of the other, much smaller, far less private, room on my main floor. I can be totally dense sometimes but I finally got there in the end! I am so excited with how this room turned out and to show you my finished office soon too!

(I got a new tool room too!)

I’m going to start with pictures from as far back as I can find to when this was my grandparents’ bedroom. I took out the closets so I could add a window on the South side and replaced the two windows with a single window on the West side. I added a much bigger closet to the North where their bedroom door used to be off the living room.

I took out the drop ceiling and covered the vaulted ceiling with beadboard and laid down wood floors. At one point I needed a workshop more than anything else so that’s what this room was for ages. I was never satisfied with it and I worked on it countless times over the years and even tried to force this space to be my office at one point too.

Every shower has a light above it, every closet has a light in it, there are a lot of extra outlets in this house (and I put them all in)

So last month I shared a lengthy blog post with you guys all about going back to making the room an office like it was supposed to be

It took ten years but the guest bedroom I always intended here is finally a finished reality. I started on this room last year when

This was one of those projects that just kept making more projects as I went. I finished the closet and built the bed. I had an extra TV so I hung it in here and of course then I needed to add an outlet behind it. Not to mention I also needed a headboard! Well then I needed lamps which needed paint and new lamp shades. And the closet needed a mirror that then needed a makeover too!

My little desk my grandparents’ made me thirty years ago worked great as a bedside table but the stool I had for it was too tall. So I gave it a makeover too by cutting its legs down. On the other side of the bed I’m using a different stool as an end table so I matched their color schemes by painting the legs white on the smaller stool as well. It just so happened they already had matching natural wood tops!

I’d been holding on to this jewelry box my grandparents’ made forever. I think it turned out pretty sweet and looks nice on the dresser in the closet in here.

I had this 54″ body pillow (which I hated for no real reason) that worked across the headboard. The pillows I already had but I did pick up a set of sheets, a mattress protector and a queen sized comforter.

I am VERY impressed with the mattress I purchased.

I think it may have weighed more than the bed frame or darned close! Its memory foam and is super firm but once you lay on it for a minute it is absolutely wonderful.

(I feel like it was just a few years ago when spending a couple thousand dollars on a mattress was not at all strange. The fact that I could get this high a quality of a mattress for only $150 still blows me away. I’m definitely going to be purchasing this same mattress whenever I get a new one for myself.)

This is going to sound a bit strange but I’m looking forward to having this room if I ever get sick again. (I know… what a weird statement.) But if you’re sick enough there’s only so much sleeping and reading a person can do before a TV to stare at is a very welcome thing.

Several years ago I got the absolute worst strep throat of my life complete with a fever of 103.

It hurt so bad I couldn’t sleep or even read.

At the front door my cousin dropped off a bag of every numbing agent that she could find and ran from my house. She text: I LOVE YOU! DON’T DIE! I swear she saved my life. At some point I’m sure my blood type became chloraseptic numbing throat spray as I did NOT follow the instructions of use.

I ended up on the couch for four days straight and back then I had one very pathetic couch.

It really sucked.

I know I could put a TV in my master bedroom but that’s not something I’ll ever do. My bedroom is for sleeping. Its been proven that any kind of screen time absolutely destroys our sleep. (Of course in multi family homes getting everyone a TV for their own bedrooms is totally understandable.)

But this sure will be nice to have if I ever get sick again *knocks on wood* hopefully I’m not jinxing myself by even bringing it up! The last time I felt like death was COVID years ago and that was only one really bad day.

I made a little caddy for my guests of lotion, tooth brushes, tooth paste, a couple of combs and razers. And, of course I’ll lay out fresh towels for them too.

This room has given me so much extra storage for my main floor.

I have extra folding chairs and step ladders in the closet and under the bed I have all of my wrapping paper etc. and the cushions from my outdoor sun loungers in the winter. Up high in the closet is most of my camping gear.

None of it is in the way and most of it is totally hidden.

The outside door in here is the biggest drawback to this room and someday I will be removing it entirely. I’m torn on whether to replace it with a window (like it had been initially when I renovated this room) or to just take out the door entirely as I already have five exterior doors besides. I immediately thought I’d move the head of the bed to that wall if I did that but, frankly, this room works as good as it possibly can just as it is.

As bedrooms go this is the ideal room on the main floor, it is steps from the bathroom in a private hallway. This used to be the screened in porch back before my grandparents converted into their own bedroom. Looking back I realize that the head of the bed here is exactly where my grandparents had their bed for over forty years.

On the bed is a chenille bedspread that I’ve had forever that’s been around a lot longer than I have. I’ve kept it safe with no “right” place to use it before this.

I had suspected it came from my Dad’s side of my family but I didn’t know for sure until he saw the room and his eyes lit up, “Do you know where that came from? That was my Mom’s blanket!” He hugged me so hard. And this is why I keep things. He could barely believe it was still around.

I think its perfect here.

Dad has spent many nights staying over sleeping under his Mom’s chenille bedspread. I don’t doubt him and his siblings used it all throughout their childhoods. This was probably the first time in at least fifty years that he slept under his Mom’s blanket.

You can see its one corner is torn as this blanket has been around a long time. I would love to figure out how to fix it somehow someday.

Bedspreads like these just aren’t very common anymore though I feel like they used to be super popular. They are incredibly oversized and amazingly thin while at the same time somehow also being very very heavy. They’re designed to drape a bed all the way to the floor eliminating the need for a bed skirt.

Of course I built this bed so tall that that wasn’t going to happen here lol, but I do like just how far the bed spread drapes over the bed – I think it has kind of a sweet boho quality.

If you’re wondering about the lack of closet doors and weird rug layering: I don’t blame you. But I made both choices deliberately. There are wood floors under there that I laid down and stained during the renovation but they’ve been pretty beat up since then and I felt like this room could really use some softness.

Because of the high ceilings this space could be kind of echoey. So this is how I layered several rugs that I happened to have on hand to “carpet” the whole room.

Now that I’ve left those closet doors off (and put in the hanging storage like I did) I am SO glad that I did. Leaving that giant closet open makes the room feel so much bigger. Its like it has its own dressing room! I chose to angle the nicest of the rugs right on into the closet, making the illusion that its just an extension of the space and not just a closet.

(At some point I plan on taking my wood floors right into all of my closets. During the renovation it was a small cost and time saver for me to skip it.)

There was already plenty of space in here for the queen size bed (over 3 feet for walking all around it) but making a room feel bigger seems like its always a good call.

If you’re wondering about the paint color: I don’t blame you for that either.

Several of you guys asked if I was going to repaint this room because it is honestly a bit much. But repainting this room is going to be a VERY big job. It would best be done with a paint sprayer actually because getting rid of the dark in all of those grooves is going to be a total nightmare.

I do plan on doing that someday but I think for now its just fine. Between the artwork and the color, with just the lamps on, it is actually very cozy.
