I’ve mentioned it from time to time here on the blog but when it comes to me and my pillow I’m a bit of the princess from the Princess and the Pea fairytale. It was kind of a yucky story actually as the prince was trying to find and marry a “true” princess and his mother’s test was putting a single pea beneath a giant stack of mattresses. As only a “true” princess would be soft and sensitive enough to sleep poorly because of a single pea. It is a good lesson on the teaching that even tiny things can make a huge impact in our lives… but still.

I suffered a crushed vertebrae in my neck when I was just a kid. At the time I didn’t really notice because I was a farm girl and at twelve I bounced back in the face of just about everything.

But then the migraines started.

It was a chiropractor that my mom took me to that discovered the source of my problems and told me to get myself a decent pillow. Crisis averted. No more waking up with a solidly pounding head.

I did have to teach myself to no longer sleep with my arm under my pillow though and that was bizarrely difficult!

Doc told me flat out, “If you’re sleeping with your arm under your pillow than your pillow is terrible! It doesn’t support your head at all!”

At 38 years old I am well versed on how to live with my neck so that it doesn’t impact me… but it does make me a bit high maintenance. And very opinionated about pillows!

The idea of sleeping anywhere else EVER fills me with dread. I have never once stayed anywhere in my life that provided a decent pillow.

NOT EVER!

Not even at the homes of friends or family.

And don’t even get me started on the horrible mattresses!

Unfortunately pillows don’t last though. And the way I sleep, how I sleep and my body just keeps on changing as the years go by so a single pillow has never really lasted me more than a year before it “stops” working and I have to go back to the drawing board.

Surprisingly the best pillow I ever found was less than $20 at Walmart and of course they don’t sell it anymore.

I’ve spent upwards of $100 for a single pillow and I can honestly say that price is not an indicator of a pillow that will work for me.

Lodi was quite amused when he saw how many pillows I had in my reject pile that we simply added his extra pillows to when he moved in. Pretty sure we would be up to over forty by now if I hadn’t purged some last year…

I’m pretty much set on memory foam everything at this point. (I think of our mattress and all of our pillows at tempur pedic knock offs.) My dad (also with a neck injury) was totally sold on his new memory foam mattress but, still, can’t do much more than a thin little down pillow full of feathers.

A pillow like that would be the death of me.

Every vacation we ever took he brought his pillow along so perhaps it was fated that I would end up doing the same.

Or maybe I just inherited his genes as most of my paternal family suffers from bad backs and necks and at least a couple of them have had to have surgery.

Lodi and I have two pillows each now of the least worse of all of my rejects. We both have a pretty solid 3-4 inch pillow and another super soft pillow that isn’t more than a couple of inches deep.

We stack them, swap them and overall have been doing all right with our current setup. He often sleeps with a pillow between his knees for his back and I often end up with the softest one tossed on the floor.

Sometimes the softest one on top works the best for me other times its the opposite, other times I wake up with no pillow at all.

No migraines though and my sleep is good so I can’t complain!

I was given the opportunity to product test the Elegear Deep Sleep Cooling Neck Pillow and I’m sure you’re not surprised when I say I went into this pretty doubtful.

This is a BIG pillow that has some weight to it and yet its squishy like a cloud. I liked it immediately. Just holding it makes you want to hug it!

But whether or not it would work for me was a totally different matter.

I’m pretty surprised but, two weeks later, I’m still using it.

We all know the perfect pillow for me does not exist but if this one were just a touch more solid I think it would be darned close. I’m going to keep using it and I’m going to rank it as a 7 which is really high on my pillow scale.

I think I’ve only found one pillow once that I would have given an 8.

It dawned on me that this is actually the first time I’ve ever tried a neck pillow. I had tried one back in my teens and hated it but now I’m wondering if my prejudice was justified at all.

If you’re interested in checking the pillow out you can find it here on Amazon and I even have a 10% code to share too: 5VX83YDR which doesn’t expire until April.

This is so intriguing to me as I also have never found a pillow that works for me – other than the one I’ve used (and travel with) for years! I’ve been testing a few out so I may give this one a try based on your review. Thanks so much!

Hey Laura, if you do give it a try let me know what you think of it! So far so good for me, I ended up with it flipped over (so the more solid side is on top) and that made a big difference for me!
