The key to my energy levels and to beating the afternoon sluggies for me was determining the foods that were causing it. Foggy headiness, weariness, feeling like I got hit by bus, was majorly attributed to what I was eating. I’ve had a sensitive stomach ALL of my life. When I was kid eating a piece of cheese would put me down for the count. I’m still not big on dairy and find more and more as an adult that I’m really GLAD for that. Except for a little cheese from time to time I don’t have any dairy in my diet at all.

Besides my lactose problems though the biggest issues were all attributed to gluten or, at least, the bread made here in America. I’ve had lots of folks tell me, “Oh you can buy gluten free bread or, even better, make your own. Its just wonderful!”

My answer is always: Why would I bother? I find now that I’m living on an almost total no-bread diet I don’t miss it hardly at all. And, of course I cheat every now and again and still have a little bread lol, maybe once a week etc.

But, really, if I ever eat out I’ve found the majority of sandwiches taste even better without the bread. With chips on the side I basically am eating really creative nachos for lunch and I feel SO much better for it!

They also make really tasty gluten free pasta and I find I can eat any kind of rice without any problems. I think finding our energy, our levels, our own health is really a very a personal journey that is specific to each and every one of us.

Almost everybody suffers from midday sluggishness, but coffee and Red Bull aren’t the answer.

The next time you’re craving an afternoon nap, whether you’re at work, taking care of the kids, running errands, or exercising, try one of these natural energy boosters to find the energy you need to power through the day.

Vitamins

Increase your intake of energy-improving vitamins, such as B vitamins, to sustain your energy throughout the day or get a natural, healthy boost when you need it. Look for supplements that offer a good mix of B6, B12, folic acid, thiamine, and niacin.

You can also find these substances naturally in fish, poultry, meat, and other animal products as well as bread, whole-grain cereals, brown rice, vegetables, and soya beans.

If you tend to get sluggish in the afternoon, load your lunch with some of these foods.

Vitamin B isn’t the only substance you need to enjoy sufficient energy throughout the day. Try substituting a sugary energy drink for a healthier solution, such as an apple or banana.

If you like to start the day with a smoothie, mix in spinach and blueberries for an excellent energy boost.

Sleep

Feeling sluggish or tired? Your body isn’t being subtle about what it needs. Setting aside more time for sleep is a much better solution than adjusting your diet so that you can put more strain on your body.

Of course, you need to balance plenty of sleep with the right diet. Moreover, getting the right amount of sleep is recommended for more than staying energized throughout the day. Insufficient sleep will lead to problems such as:

Regardless of whether you can schedule more sleep each day, take a look at ways your diet and lifestyle could be affecting your sleep quality.

Things like caffeine, alcohol, and antihistamines will lower your sleep quality, but even external factors such as a lack of natural light can lead to irregular sleep patterns and problems setting your biological clock.

You should take a more holistic approach to sleep health, too. Pain and anxiety, as well as medications taken for these things, can greatly affect your sleep quality.

Working to lower your stress levels can have a huge impact on the amount of energy you have during the day. Getting out and being social can also help improve your mood and stay active, thus helping you obtain better sleep.

Water

Water intake has a direct effect on performance, mood, brain function, and energy levels.

In addition, if you get dehydrated, you put yourself at risk of serious problems like lightheadedness, heart palpitations, and weakness. Drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day is recommended, though you may need more depending on your activity levels.

Feeling tired throughout the day is a sign that you need to re-evaluate your diet and lifestyle. Aim to get more sleep if possible, and work in the above changes to your nutrition and daily activities to boost and sustain your energy.
