February 2024 – So I guess we’re not doing winter this year

I’m starting this blog post in early February 2024 and me (and all of my coworkers) are staring in shock as it just started RAINING outside. It rained in January this year too… In fact, we basically have no snow right now and this will certainly get rid of the last of it. We’ve consistently broken record highs since the start of 2024 and its just awesome but, I will admit, its also a bit creepy. I saw a picture of a bank sign in late January on the day we hit 50 degrees in 2024 and the same sign on the same day in 2023 when the temperature was negative 38.

Lodi plowed snow once in December but really didn’t even actually NEED to… If this becomes the norm I am one very happy northern Minnesotan!

And our forecast is utterly outrageous with highs in the 40s and 30s consistently. Literally, it not getting above zero right now would seem more normal. (Though you won’t here anyone complaining…)

It feeling like spring throughout January and February 2024 was a wonderful experience and I really really hope it goes right on to when spring actually gets here!

As usual throughout January and well into February I really hibernate lol.

I’m quite the introvert and no matter how much I love my family the holidays absolutely exhaust and stress me the heck out. With our crappy year of 2023 getting my mojo back took a long time and then, when I really did finally get motivated and moving again, the holidays hit me.

Fortunately I did do a full makeover on the workshop before the holidays hit so I at least have SOMETHING to show for last year. (Yeah I know lol that poor room, will I ever leave it alone?!)

I went nuclear and I am so happy with it now!

One of the coolest things I did was create a cozy reading nook that incorporates a little day bed / sofa. Its become my happy spot where me and the dogs like to nap.

Lodi has been using our guest bedroom as his game room over the past couple of years and it could absolutely work better for him.

He loved my day bed idea and we’re thinking about doing some changes in the guest bedroom incorporating that. The only thing is the full size bed in there is practically new and very comfortable so it seems like a shame to get rid of it.

But our guest bedroom is just not that big of a room and even a full size bed in there really takes up a ton of floor space…

Other projects my brain has been turning on is taking me back to the oh-so-neglected basement. We finished up the living space, closet and bathroom down there a few years ago but we really just don’t use it much despite that we both love how it turned out. So, any projects still left down there I have a lot of trouble getting excited about.

But the stairwell to the basement remains the last unfinished space in this house.

And the kitchen down there is functional but in desperate need of paint, hardware, shelves and an actual backsplash that isn’t just unfinished sheetrock.

And the majority of the projects we have everything we need to complete them because back when we tackled the living space I got super excited to get the rest done ASAP so I bought practically everything we needed… like three years ago.

We love how the living space turned out so why don’t we use it more?

We’re only two people and already have a living room besides we each have our own offices besides the guest bedroom that Lodi uses for gaming plus our second floor master suite! Frankly we are really fortunate to have this lovely place and so much space but it is definitely more than we need.

Also, why would I go all the way downstairs when I can sit here right by all of the snacks?

Its for good reason I had planned on turning the basement into a rental back in my very very broke and single days like nearly a decade ago.

It would make a lot more sense to finish the space as a true guest bedroom suite with multiple sleeping options. Anyone staying with us would appreciate the big bathroom and full kitchen not to mention the privacy of an entire floor to themselves.

Our guest bedroom right now isn’t private at all in comparison and, as I mentioned, is moonlighting as Lodi’s own game room that he really enjoys and uses.

February 2024

The furniture we have down there are recliners like LA-Z-Boys (four to be exact) so it does still work for extra sleeping so, it is what it is and I’m getting over it.

We almost never have over night guests anyway and what’s that old joke? You don’t want your guests too comfortable or they may never leave lol.

February 2024 something I’ve noticed as we, and everyone we know, gets older: No one wants to stay over at someone else’s house anymore unless they have absolutely no choice.

We’re adults LOL.

Besides responsibilities like pets and kids we’ve all spent a lot of money and time on our own happy home arrangements. Its taken most of us years to get the perfect mattress, pillow and blanket situation and almost everyone I know sleeps like crap outside of that – including me. (Not to mention the whole privacy thing…)

I think we all become more home bodies the older we get and I fully support it. On that note, we’re going on a three day cruise in a few days.

Would it be nice to go on a vacation? Yes.

Does this sound crappy to me? Also yes.

It would be leaving here at 2am, traveling for 12 hours to almost certainly sleep the entire first day of a three day cruise… That is if we don’t miss the cruise entirely as we only have about a couple hour window after our plane lands to get there…

It’s something I would have been excited about in my 20s.

Its February 2024, I just turned 38…

All I can think about is how awesome it would be to have a week vacation here at home.

No stress. No need to rush or be anywhere. No boat or plane to catch. No alarms. No someone else’s schedule on what I’m doing, how and when I’m doing it, for DAYS.

Maybe too much reading. Maybe too much pizza. Maybe wearing nothing but jammies. Maybe too much soaking in our bathtub. Maybe sleeping until noon.

HEAVEN

(Realistically my perfect vacation would be an all inclusive hotel in the middle of nowhere with hot, dry weather, no activities, no sites to see, no choices to make, decent food, drinks, a pool, a vow of silence for literally everyone, and a new book series on my kindle… I can’t be the only one!)

Tune in next month for when I know I’ll admit to thoroughly enjoying our cruise!
