Floor lamp makeover for our living room. Beside our sofa we have a little table I built years ago with a built in power strip. Its fine for setting a drink on and we charge electronics there all the time but its always been a bit narrow for a lamp. This last year I finally knocked the lamp off of it for the 100th time and had had enough. We needed to do something different. Of course the fact that it gave me the opportunity to go thrifting (one of my favorite things) had no bearing on my decision to buy a new floor lamp whatsoever…
Our little town has really stepped up for me when it comes to thrifting. Over the past few years we’ve gone from one salvage depot to two other thrift stores now added to the mix.
The one I stopped at to go looking for lamps keeps expanding and is ENORMOUS. Like three times the size it was when I first visited which meant I had SO MUCH more than I had anticipated to choose from.
Of course any thrift store means you’re going to be pawing through the many design styles of the last century so it did take me awhile to settle on this one.
I liked that it was small, subtle and had an arm swing which I thought would be just perfect in our living room over the sofa.
Of course it was the wrong color though as I’m entirely over that old world fake “bronze” look of a couple decades ago and have settled here on either chrome or white for hardware.
One can of gloss white Rustoleum spray paint and a miraculously warm day in February was all it took!
The lamp shade was on one of our old table lamps for awhile and I have to admit that I totally hated it then.
Transferring it to this standing lamp though and I have no more problems with the big gray lamp shade. Honestly I think it was just too big and dark for the particular table lamp I had put it on.
Major improvement from the table lamp we kept knocking over…
Thinking this room deserves a bit of a refresher and also thinking about recovering our coffee table…
I love that shade on that light. I sure wish I could do all of the renovations that you do.
Thank you Carol!
I love most floor lamps and I love, love the new look on yours. I have one from my grandmothers house with a glass bowl for the shade. I don’t think I could replace it so the lamp stays in the corner and gives us “ambiance” lighting..I love it. Say YES to floor lamps!!
Hi MaryBeth, yep I’m loving the floor lamp idea now that we got this one!
Your lamp looks nice all freshen up! I still have a floor lamp that needs an updated look, but I can’t seem to find the time.
Thanks Allyson! If it makes you feel any better I’d been planning on painting this lamp for four months before I finally got around to it and it took all of ten minutes lol.
