So, after lots of work and more money than I wanted to spend (because I never like spending money) I have officially turned our workshop into JUST my office! Well, I call it my office anyway, but Lodi started calling it the game room and that’s definitely going to stick though it is my office 100%. This really does feel like a den for chillaxing, reading, playing etc. I do quite a bit of work here but even I have to admit that I still probably use my desktop more for gaming than anything else. There’s even enough floor space to set up a card table.

Firstly with the pictures I’m going to start by going all the way back to 2018 when I first tackled this gray and empty room.

lot of storage space…” While I’m eyeing my over packed workshop in the house wondering just how much stuff I could move out here…

Tool hangers in our workshop closet… In my last post I think I got you guys up to date on the situation of my workshop (or I bored you

A total tear down in the workshop... So at this point I feel like we need to take a little step back to appreciate the amount

Patching walls with spray foam and sheetrock mud. With the decision to tear out all the wood "wainscoting" in

Overlapping rugs and layering them in my new office. Whenever I think of rug layering I think of my Grandma Eleonora (my Dad's mom)

New directional light fixture for the office. A few years back my mom hired me to update her little guest house and it was a big job.

Figuring out the office furniture we want in our new space. With the rug layering situation figured out this room is starting to feel

Not all of my projects turn out as great as I hope but this one definitely exceeded my expectations. (Though its probably just because you guys know I just haven’t been happy with this room no matter how many times I’ve tackled it over the years.)

Was it organized before?

Yes.

Was it packed full though?

Yes.

Would one thing disrupt the balance of so much stuff so carefully organized?

Yes.

And did that happen constantly?

Yes.

It was not an environment that worked for me. It stressed me out no matter how many times I organized it or tried to purge more out of it. There was just too much stuff, in too small of a space, for my peace.

The answer came to me actually when I was working out in our garage.

I had no idea I was creating the space for everything out there that didn’t need to be in here!

Maybe I did it subconsciously?

I am very much so a person that can’t handle clutter. (There is almost nothing on my desk… EVER.) I live for empty surfaces and that’s true throughout our house.

“Stuff” just stresses me the heck out.

After many tries to make this room work I finally had to just go nuclear to make this space happy for me.

I cant believe how much I like this room now.

Because its our back entry with the doggie door this will always be the coldest room in the house in the winter so I set out to “warm” it up as much as I could.

(I was going for “warm” meaning: “cozy” but the addition of all of the textiles has actually helped the room hold an ACTUAL warmer temperature as well!)

The corner with the sofa is so welcoming and comfy.

Not only was I surprised at how much space I ended up with in that corner I was also surprised at how big the sofa was when I got it set up. (I still feel like only $200 for that sofa was a steel.)

At nearly 6 feet long and over 3 feet deep it is a legitimate bed for extra sleeping if we ever have a need for it.

Even though they can use all the other beds and sofas in the house this has become the favorite spot of both of our dogs too.

They’ve always acted like this space was very much so THEIR room and they were comically concerned about every thing I did in here.

Both dogs were hilarious when I covered the floor with rugs for the first time. They just loved it! They danced and rolled around like silly puppies!

I had to kick them out so I could finish getting all the rugs down and adjusting them. After that it seemed the sofa covered in copious pillows and blankets was the serious cherry on top.

It wasn’t my goal to get the dogs’ approval here (lol) but I’m happy they’re happy.

(Absolute must haves for me when it comes to owning dogs. #1 A doggie door with a big enough fenced in yard that we never have to pick up poop. #2 A safe place to lock them up adjacent to said doggie door.)

We added an outside latch to the interior door so we can lock the dogs out here if we ever need to… so I guess its good they like how the room turned out.

The three tropical paintings were done with spray paint by a street artist in Mexico when my family went for a trip there around 25 years ago.

The big original painting was done by my uncle and given to me as a gift… I absolutely adore it.

The cork board by my desk literally hung in my first ever bedroom back when I was a toddler… So its going on forty years old at this point and was very likely made by my grandparents.

The picture there is of my mom and me from twenty years ago.

On the board there’s also an original pencil sketch by a different uncle of mine and a note my mom left me many many many years ago that I somehow held on to which I really wish I had put a date on.

There’s also a sweet note there from Lodi that I did remember to date from 2020.

A HOARDER? ME? NEVER!

When my dad down sized last year he gave me his few keepsakes…

Which are kind of cool and did make for some interesting décor on the shelf in here…

HOWEVER…

This house (and ME) are definitely an attractant for all old things my family doesn’t want to throw away… and I feel like its getting out of hand lol.

But of course I can’t say “no” to what might be the last possession still around of my great great Grandma’s – of course her ancient snow globe MUST be kept safe FOREVER.

And OF COURSE I’ll be the one to do it!

Pairing down my desk area from the two large tables to just one of them gave this room all of its space. I still have my “L” work station though as I kept the little narrow table along the wall which amazingly turned out to be the perfect depth for my shelf, laptop and desktop.

I’d encourage anyone to get (or build) a desk shelf as it saves so much space! My desktop fits neatly under it along with my keyboard and mouse with plenty of room for a lot more.

I also really love my big desk mat that works as a coaster, mouse pad, wrist rest, desk protector, etc.

I used to have my desk in front of the window which meant my monitor and the shade blocked all natural light before I moved my work station.

Opening up the view went a long way in helping this room breathe again.

And I like having my little spot in front of the closet to work as I have any office storage hidden right behind me too.
