A decidedly easy DIY because we decided to purchase lumber storage racks instead of building them. You guys know I always fight with myself between building something and buying. The kicker for me was price ($100 for two sets of two racks – see them here on Amazon) and space savings. If I had built this it would have had floor to rafter support posts as I’m just real nervous about “hanging” this kind of weight in lumber off of the wall. These are made of steel and, with their reviews, I am about 98% confidant I won’t be coming out here one morning to find all of our lumber on top of my car…

After I opened the box I was surprised to find that there was nothing included to actually mount the racks to the wall…

I guess they didn’t want to be responsible for it all falling on my car either!

We’ve got a lot of screw options on hand around here but I still wanted something much beefier than just a 3″ wood screw.

The giant torque screws I picked up from Ace hardware were 75 cents a piece but you can’t put a dollar amount on piece of mind lol.

Putting the lumber storage together was very simple, add a screw, slide on a rack and continue until completion.

I was concerned initially that the little screw heads were expected to hold any kind of weight but once I screwed the rack to the wall their only purpose was to hold them momentarily in place until they were mounted.

Once mounted all of the weight falls directly against the supporting steel shaft that’s sandwiched to the studs.

Initially I admit I was a bit bummed and honestly thought these weren’t going to hold near enough.

I even considered removing every other rack to create a little more storage space but didn’t because I was worried about weight. Obviously each rack is only designed to hold so much.

Once I got going though I was thrilled! (And very tired of hauling wood up my step ladder lol)

I can’t believe how much these things hold!

And they’ll be even better for 2x4s etc. as I will be able to put those in front of the rough sawn 1x8s that you see there now. The lumber storage racks are 12 inches deep which is totally plenty.

I’m calling it “lumber storage” but in all reality it is really just bad ass storage for just about anything.

I’ll admit it was hung up and full of wood for a couple of days before I parked my car beside it though lol.

With the buffet gone from this wall I also no longer need to let a passenger out before parking because now they can actually get out of my car because there’s so much room there now.

Now I’m not exactly sure where I’m going from here honestly…

I want to build a more permanent version of a work bench with our miter saw built right into it and I may actually just do that to our current bench / buffet but I’m not positive yet.

I will certainly be painting out the buffet and old upper cabinets though to give them a face lift!
