Getting a waterside home ready for the winter! Though we may live about as far from the ocean as it gets (quite literally in the center of the continent) we are also the land of 10,000 lakes. At least half of my friends and family live on the water! There is a lot of maintenance to a lake (or seaside) home though oftentimes not really considered until you get there. I think its totally worth it though and have always dreamed of one day having a little river cabin!

Whether you have a holiday home by the sea or you live near the beach all year round, a house in a coastal area is both a blessing and a curse. Undoubtedly, living here, you will enjoy some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets, benefit from the healthy sea air, and enjoy a close connection with the ocean.

At the same time, the salt in the air, sand, winds, and the elements can affect the sturdiness and comfort of your home. Luckily, with all the right preparations, you can make the most of your seaside house during summer and protect it during the autumn and winter months. Here are just a few of the easiest tips to put into practice at the end of the summer season.

Get the Garden Ready for Winter

Firstly, you should look at getting your garden or outside area ready for winter. To do so, make sure you get rid of leaves and debris, cover the most sensitive plants, and protect the youngest crops. You could also consider investing in a patio or veranda that allows you to enjoy your home’s location throughout winter. Additionally, if you are planning on inviting your friends and family to your home during the winter months, a porch is a great place to receive them and enjoy time together.

Look After Your Furniture

If you have outdoor furniture, seats, benches, and tables, this is the time to cover themes and safely store them away. In fact, during the winter months, the sea salt in the air, rains, and winds can corrode your furniture, discolor it, and make it unusable. All you need to do to continue enjoying your furniture throughout the years is store them away and create a more winter-friendly outdoor area – a porch area ready and heated up by outdoor heaters might be all you need!

Keep Up With Maintenance

Home maintenance is important all year round, but it is especially so during the autumn and winter months. Firstly, make sure to complete all renovation projects you have going on. Additionally, keep up with regular checks such as the electrical and plumbing system. And, of course, complete all the necessary checks to ensure that the roof and gutters are free of cracks, damages, and debris!

Create a Healthy Indoor Environment

During the winter months, you are more likely to keep your doors and windows shut. However, because of the lack of fresh air and natural light, it is essential to find other ways to create a ready and healthy environment. Some of these strategies include swapping the curtains for lighter ones, embracing minimalism, and keeping up with decluttering and cleaning tasks.

Another great way to make your indoor living environment even healthier is to decorate with natural elements, such as metal, plants, wooden objects, and bricks.

Store Your Boat

If you live by the sea, the chances are that you have a boat. If you only enjoy this activity during the warmer months and you need to protect your investment during autumn and winter, Storing Boat for winter solutions can help you protect your assets from the damaging action of the elements.
