We’re finally gearing up here for actual summer – nearly a month later with how crazy our weather has been! But this week its looking like we can finally get out in the yard and prepare our landscape for summer! Lodi already got our side by side and riding lawn mower in for all the maintenance they require for another year here of fun and yard maintenance. I got our magnetic screen doors installed and put away our electric waterer, replacing it with a bird bath with a solar fountain. There is a ton to do, as always, but we are so looking forward to it!

Summer’s dry weather and high temperatures can significantly stress your landscape. Making proper preparations for this season ensures that all the time, money, and effort spent on the preceding seasons don’t go to waste. Maintaining a fresh, lush landscape, especially during summer, is a great challenge for most homeowners due to the drought conditions.
There’s always something you can do to keep your landscape luxurious, green, and fresh, even during the hottest seasons. Discussed below are five ways to prepare your landscape for summer.
Hiring a professional landscaper is an excellent way to keep your landscaping and lawn healthy and well cared for, increasing curb appeal and creating an enjoyable outdoor space for summer. Reliable, experienced, and professional landscapers such as Malone’s Landscape can guide and help create a landscaping design suitable for your home, ensuring that your space is attractive and full of healthy plants ideal for your location’s climate.
Thanks to their experience, they can identify landscaping problems early enough, including infestations and diseases, and fix them before escalating into more significant issues. Without a professional landscaper, you might spend most of your summer weekends trimming bushes, mowing the lawn, or cleaning the yard. However, hiring a landscaping service allows you to enjoy the summer weather with your loved ones while maintaining a healthy landscape.
Mulching provides a protective barrier for bare soil and around plants, blocking sunlight from getting to the weed seeds and weed. This prevents weeds from germinating and ensures that they don’t compete with your plants for nutrients and water. Organic mulch absorbs water and retains moisture in hot weather, ensuring that plants don’t desiccate and reducing your water bill expenses. Landscape mulching controls pests, reducing leaf miners and thrips. It also improves your garden’s look by filling the empty spaces while ensuring easy maintenance.
Frequent landscape watering is crucial during summer. You can install an automatic irrigation system to enable consistent watering. However, you should be wary of the drought restrictions within your area when creating a watering routine. Plants and turf will require a lot of water to pull through the summer heat. Even if your region gets a lot of rainfall, the natural moisture may not be sufficient enough for the greenery in your plants and lawn. Consider watering early mornings or at night to prevent the moisture from evaporating in the day’s heat.
A regular mowing routine exposes your grass blades to the appropriate sunlight amount, helping the grass grow greener and healthy. As the lawn becomes greener, thicker, and healthier, its aesthetic appeal increases. Incorporating string edging and trimming ensures that your yard always appears well-manicured. Moreover, the grass clippings from your mowing sessions provide additional nutrients to your lawn, improving its health. Consistent mowing also controls pests and promotes weed management.
Fertilizers supplement your soil’s nutrients to keep the grass growing lush and thick. Apply fertilizer depending on your grass type and period of the year. Consult an experienced landscaper to determine the right time to fertilize your plants and the frequency needed to keep your space summer-ready.
Summer is an excellent time to enjoy the outdoors, so make it worthwhile. Use these tips to prepare your landscape for summer.
