So, it is interesting that we love this new redesign so much because it is LITERALLY my old layout plan for the living room that we tried and hated a few years back. There’s only one difference and I refuse to believe it’s actually why we hated this before. When we tried it back then the sofa encroached into the “hallway” by several more inches, making walking behind it feel kind of tight… Could that be it? A few inches on that side of the room? I talked about why we hated it before and it was because the room felt closed off… but somehow now, it feels bright, intimate and open all at the same time.

I guess there is one other difference besides those few inches taken out of the hallway.

After we took out our island to have a place for our Xmas tree this year we never brought it back. We have other plans for our island but it really just felt like the corner of our kitchen could use a change.

So that area being “empty” right now may have been partly why the layout before didn’t work…

Or, heck, maybe we just got bored with the old layout and were ready for something different!

Besides the new layout there are a couple of new additions to this space.

We were in need of a floor lamp to replace an old table lamp so I picked one up at the thrift store and gave it a makeover. The other difference is we reupholstered our coffee table with some fun new fabric.

I also recovered ALL of our sofa pillows and am loving that I can throw the covers in the wash anytime and also change them up if we feel like it.

I read through the last reveal post and WOW I really did forget how much of a job this room was!

It took me over five months to start from scratch and give myself the living room of my dreams. I emptied it, refinished the floors, painted the entire room (plus the chimney) and then got slowly to work finishing it out.

HERE’S THE PROJECT LIST:

Chimney Makeover – Painting Faux Stone, My Living Room & Stairwell
Adding a Skirt to my Sofa Table Charging Station
Blanket Storage Shelves out of my Grandpa’s Old Wooden Ladder
Quilt Wall Hanging – Retiring an Heirloom while Adding Color and a Shelf
Adding Tufted Upholstery to an old Coffee Table
Living Room Area Rug – Picking One Out: My Total Nightmare
Serving Tray – Old Window Upcycle for the Living Room!
Windows: Upcycling to make Farmhouse artwork for the living room!

The old thrifted (and stained) chair is long gone and currently in its place is a rocking chair I’ve had forever.

I picked it up at an estate sale and painted it black and its been with me ever since. I like it though its not incredibly comfortable it is very STURDY and works great here for now.

Our sofa table charging station still remains one of the most used items in our home.

It did finally wear out though and I actually replaced its power strip right after rearranging the room.

If you guys have been following than you know I’ve been going nuclear on our rug situation on the first floor. Before we had NINETEEN rugs!

It felt really silly.

So, in conclusion, after working on the entryway, the kitchen, the workshop office and now the living room we’re down to ELEVEN.

Changing the layout here meant our living room’s area rug could slide practically right up to our french doors eliminating the other rug we previously had in front of them.

For forever we had a rug between the living room and the back hall but I still have no idea why that was even necessary so that ones gone now too.

There’s still a pretty big jumble of different colored rag rugs around the house (mostly in front of the outside doors) but I still love the look of that to some extent as I think it really does fit our farmhouse vibe.

As for pure comfort this living room has always done pretty good by us.

The couch sleeps two people comfortably and if you scoot the coffee table into the corner it literally creates a full size bed. (The absolute perfect spot for when we’re feeling under the weather.)

On a regular day the coffee table is our foot rest for when we just need to zone out in front of the TV.

Though not a lot of changes here besides the layout we’re really happy with it!

Funny tidbit you guys might get a kick out of: I love having that box at the end of the couch for storing blankets, I think it looks perfect there and makes total sense.

We couldn’t wrap our heads around it though.

Lodi went damned near head over heals twice in one night from both directions, his poor shin!

So then I swapped the blanket box with the little sewing box that was beside the tv and then I proceeded to try to destroy my own shin three times!

So there’s nothing at the end of the sofa anymore lol.
