I’m not going to lie to you guys, garage doors scare the crap out of me! Of all the DIY I’ve done around here it was our garage doors that I refused to go anywhere near. I’ve heard too many horror stories of people getting seriously hurt when they over tightened the springs and they snapped. Fortunately now though they are nowhere near as dangerous as they used to be and regular maintenance even I’m comfortable doing!

Your garage door is a significant part of your home’s security. You can ensure that it operates smoothly through regular maintenance. You also expand its lifespan and prevent expensive repairs down the line. You can avoid sudden malfunctions that happen at the most inconvenient times by dedicating time for routine upkeep. Below are DIY steps that you can take to keep your garage door in top shape.

Preparation Steps and Tools Needed

Before diving into the regular maintenance of a garage door process, gather the necessary tools and prepare your workspace. You’ll need a sturdy ladder, work gloves, a flashlight, a variety of lubricants, cleaning supplies, and a set of basic tools like screwdrivers and wrenches. It’s also a good idea to disconnect the garage door opener from the power source to prevent accidents during the maintenance process.

Inspecting Hardware and Moving Parts

A key component of regular maintenance is checking the condition of your garage door’s hardware and moving parts. Begin by carefully examining all nuts, bolts, and screws for tightness and signs of wear. Tighten any loose fasteners to prevent potential hazards.

Next, inspect the rollers, tracks, and hinges. Rollers should turn smoothly without any grinding noises. Clean the tracks with a soft brush to remove debris that might hinder the door’s movement. Lubricate the rollers and hinges with a high-quality silicone spray to reduce friction and ensure quiet operation.

Lubrication and Cleaning

Proper lubrication is crucial for a garage door’s longevity. While silicone spray is ideal for rollers and hinges, use a dry graphite lubricant on metal-to-metal contact points like the chain or belt on your garage door opener. Avoid using oil-based lubricants as they attract dirt and grime.

Cleaning your garage is another essential maintenance task. Use a mild detergent and soft brush to remove dirt and grime from the door’s surface. Pay attention to the bottom seals, as they help prevent air leaks and water damage.

Testing Safety Features

Safety should always be a top priority when it comes to garage doors. Regularly test your door’s auto-reverse and photo-eye sensors. To test the auto-reverse feature, place an object in the door’s path as it closes.

The door should reverse automatically when it encounters the obstacle. For the photo-eye sensors, shine a flashlight between them. The door should not close if the beam is interrupted. If either of these safety features doesn’t work as expected, it’s time to call for professional repair.

Weatherstripping and Insulation

Maintaining good weatherstripping is essential for energy efficiency and preventing drafts. Inspect the weatherstripping around the garage door for any signs of wear or damage. Replace worn-out seals to improve your home’s insulation and reduce energy costs. If your garage door is insulated, check the condition of the insulation material. Look for any tears or gaps. If necessary, replace damaged insulation to maintain optimal performance.

Endnote

Regular maintenance is important for your garage door’s longevity and safety. By following these steps and scheduling regular maintenance checks for your garage door, you can keep it in working order with regular maintenance. Remember, prevention is key. Addressing small issues early on can save you from costly repairs down the line. If you’re unsure about any aspect of garage door maintenance, or if you encounter problems you can’t resolve, it’s always best to consult a professional.
