May 2024 I mean, seriously, what is going on with losing stuff around here? Its almost to the point of being funny… We have THOUSANDS of trees on this property. Do you know which one died on us a couple of years ago? The one tree I would LEAST want to lose! So, here we go again, with yet another empty spot in our yard. This massive old oak lasted over a hundred years and then just decided he was done. He stood perfectly in front of our master bedroom windows, shielding us from the sun in the summers and the road all year around.

We actually had a mutual day off with definite yard working plans but not for this. Lodi got a call from the tree guy that took down a jack pine for us last year as guy remembered we had this oak that we needed to deal with at some point.

Fine. Whatever. Get it over with…

The location of the tree had us worried as it coming down on the house on its own was quite likely – if nothing else it almost certainly would have taken out the dog kennel fencing.

Which was why we wanted this done professionally!

While he got to work on the tree we continued the work we had planned to tackle that day which was getting prepped for when the skid steer we rented was coming that next weekend.

We still had some things to empty out of the horse shed and we had to completely empty our little storage shed so we can move it.

That little shed stored an impressive amount of wood!

We used our yard cart and hauled all the wood over to our lower fire pit, out of the way and right there for when we want to have a fire.

Our yard is getting a massive overhaul sometime in June so getting our skid steer work done before that was mandatory. (The little shed was literally in the way.)

Lodi also had a list of work we wanted to do around here besides that.

He plans on cleaning out the horse shed completely and smoothing down a couple of loads of gravel inside and outside of it as an apron.

When we had the new septic system put in last year they had some extra rock leftover that seemed a shame to just bury so Lodi’s going to use the skid steer to get that out of the way as well.

Currently the rock is on top of a random concrete slab that is now just a bizarre pad in the middle of our yard. When they come to overhaul our yard they’re taking that out for us too.

They’re also going to take out an over grown (and almost dead) lilac bush that’s right by the new septic system.

The lilac bush isn’t actually much of a threat to our new system but the two trees growing out of the middle of it absolutely are.

One thing I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older is utilizing equipment as often as we can. I am sick and tired of hurting my back and feeling like a pack mule lol.

What was that I just said?

Oh right – NOT being a pack mule…

Once he got the Oak safely down our tree guy headed out and we just stared at the tremendous mess.

We got really lucky that day as we’ve been in a severe drought for years and finding days safe enough to burn have been few and far between. This just so happened to be a perfect day for burning with rain behind us and more coming that evening.

I can’t express the incredible mess we cleaned up that day, the pictures just can’t do it justice.

Cleaning up dead fall like this has to be the crabbiest job I’ve ever experienced lol.

It is SO annoying!

Poked, scratched, whip lashed, scraped and tripped. Every branch was hung up on another branch and everything bit. Trying to move any of it was a constant battle as everything caught on everything and everything caught on them.

Our main focus was getting the dog kennel fence back up so we had initially just said, “Get it good enough to just get the fence back up!”

But Lodi and I are stubborn.

At some unspoken moment we just dug in and kept at it.

So we were putting up the fence in the pouring rain.

Sweating, freezing, dirty, swearing and soaked I’m still proud to say we did not snap at each other even then.

Thousands of steps later, we got it done.

Humorous dialogue of the day (don’t quote me on this), “I was wrong – I hate trees – we’re not planting another tree!” “Let’s just sell the place and move into a little apartment.”

Though I will miss that tree I loved to watch it burn lol.

My mom stopped by at the end to find two dirty, drowned rats leaning on pitch forks by the fire, “Oh my gosh you guys get into a hot shower before you catch the death of you!”

I hate how open and naked the front of our house is now…

Again, of all the trees, why did it have to be that one!?

We had him leave the stump tall because this was my dog’s tree and the tree under which I buried him back in 2017. The night he died was a beautiful night and I found him out here, just sitting under this old oak, looking up at the sky.

So I want to do something with the stump for him. I may decide to hollow it out and plant something or maybe we could cut it into a seat?

I’m not sure yet but that’s a project for another day.

With the tree gone now unfortunately its going to be hard to keep procrastinating back here.

The tree hid the fact that we still need to finish siding around the window that we swapped with the door a few years back. And the back step here I literally just threw together at some point…

Now everyone can see it when they drive in the yard!

Its a nice area though we have little desire to “enjoy” it being right on a dusty dirt road as it is. But it’s also South facing with a wind break (just like the horse shed) so its quite pleasant besides traffic.

Lodi thought a small back deck to replace the step might be in order and I’m with him!

Yet again, a project for another day!
