I like to think of our home as having a modern farmhouse look. Personally I am very drawn to clean modern spaces – uncluttered and spacious. I think we’ve still managed to achieve that here without going overboard and, more importantly, while still remaining true to the heart of a 100 year old farmhouse. Beautiful but comfortable, sleek but in no way pretentious. I really is my very favorite look in interior design.

Whether you live on a farm or not, the farmhouse interior style is a great way of creating a warm and inviting home that’s perfect for a family. But if you prefer things to be a little more modern, you might find that the traditional farmhouse style is not exactly to your taste. However, if you still want to create that warm and inviting feeling, you could try a more modern take on the style. A contemporary farmhouse style can take some of the best bits from the traditional look and update them so that they’re more suitable for a modern home.
If you want to try out a modern farmhouse style, try the following ideas to make it work in your home.
Use a Neutral Color Palette
If you look at various modern interior styles, you will find that many of them start off with a neutral color palette. This helps to give interiors a fresh look, which is excellent if contemporary is what you’re going for. This is no different if you want to create a modern farmhouse style. A neutral palette will help to keep your rooms looking bright, airy, and fresh. Of course, you don’t have to forgo color completely. You can then add some more colors on top of your neutrals to make it a little more interesting. Try some dark greens, navy blues, and grays for some pops of color.
Mix Old and New Styles
You want to create a look that’s evocative of the traditional farmhouse style but still has a modern feel. Therefore, the best thing to do is to mix both old and new elements. When you’re choosing furniture or design features in your home, mix and match the contemporary and the vintage to put together the style that you want. Shop with brands like FURCO, where you can find timeless pieces and more modern options to furnish your home. The best way to create timeless home decor is often to take the best bits from enduring interior styles and mix them with more contemporary touches.
Combine Different Textures
Your use of textures can help you to create the modern farmhouse look and feel that you want. Layering different textures and natural materials is something you can do throughout your home. Try mixing and matching different textiles and patterns so that everything adds something new to the whole look. Your use of different fabrics can help you to create a homely feel. However, you can also avoid making it look a bit too rustic and old-fashioned by choosing your patterns and textures carefully. For example, you might want to steer away from gingham check or maybe try to find a more modern take on it.
Natural Materials and Finishes
Natural materials and finishes are an excellent choice for a farmhouse-style home. They help to create a more rustic and homely look but can still be used to ensure your home is full of more refined style too. Try using raw finishes such as unwaxed wood and unpolished or painted metal so that you can enjoy the materials for what they are. Mix more rustic pieces with modern pieces that look shiny and new so that you get the best of both worlds.
Keep It Stripped Back
If you look at traditional farmhouse homes, you can see that there are often lots of frills, knick-knacks, and other decorative touches chosen to create homeliness. However, for a more modern style, you might want to avoid having too much clutter. A semi-minimal style can help you to keep things stripped back a little. You don’t need to make everything completely minimalist. You can still accessorize but think carefully about what you want to display in your home before you buy anything.
Make It Warm and Welcoming
The backbone of a farmhouse interior style is that it creates a warm and welcoming space for families. When you’re designing a modern farmhouse home, you should keep this in mind and create family spaces. This could include having a kitchen island that everyone can gather around or an open-plan living space that your family can share. Have a large dining table with bench seating and a cozy seating area for everyone to spend quality time together. Make sure it’s a family home that your whole family will love returning to at the end of the day.
You can turn the farmhouse style modern with a few contemporary touches combined with the traditional elements that make up the look.
