November: Chilling on my Couch in the Kitchen and a Pumpkin Party!

November hit us hard with serious near record breaking cold temperatures. It was a touch disheartening… I’m still enjoying the fact that its NOT summer though as with finally completing my summer to do list this chick was wore out! So I’m still enjoying my house and my whole world narrowing down to walls again as I spent every possible second this summer outside working. Give me a month and I know my tune will be totally different and I will be quite DONE with winter!

Regardless of the weather turning though November is a lovely month to be here and its always one of my favorite times of year. Everybody starts getting all festive and stoked for Bird day and Xmas and I’m no different!

We FINALLY quiet down at my day job and it feels like rest time and cozy time.

Last year I had my Xmas tree up by the end of October because I was participating in a holiday blog hop thing here with lots of small Xmas projects and decorations. That won’t be happening again. Its just not me. It drove me crazy through all of December and November… I’m over it.

What is me is:

Currently sitting on my couch, drinking a glass of wine in my kitchen!

Living room remodeling has begun!

My boyfriend helped me empty the room and stain the floors before heading out one Sunday evening.

First though, we finished staining the floors and then we turned all the lights off and curled up on the couch in my kitchen.

The pellet stove provided firelight, it was dark and cold outside because this is November in MN and we were both tired. We cozied up with a bunch of blankets and napped and now I’m trying to figure out how to incorporate a couch in my kitchen somehow because that was awesome!

I messaged Rachie (my best friend) a pic of my empty living room before I hit it with polycrylic and trapped myself upstairs for the night.

Rachie: OMG You have a dance floor! Where did all of your furniture go!?
Me: *sends pic of the madness*

My living room is not a big room but with it all emptied out if feels ENORMOUS – it even has an echo! And, yes, it really does feel like a dance floor and yes, there has been lots of dancing! I absolutely adore open spaces, I’m a minimalist at heart and have even joked that one day I’ll have no furniture left lol.

I can’t wait to finish this room but it is going to pain me to bring furniture back into it!

Next I’ll be restaining and clear coating my staircase and then its on to fixing all of the trim and repainting the living room and stairwell. (All of which needs be done by the end of November as I’m hosting Thanksgiving and at least need to unearth my dining room table for that!)

There will also be a ladder project, coffee table upholstery and an art project that I am really stoked about! Soooooo…. it will almost certainly interfere with the possibility of even decorating for Xmas at my place at all and that seems pretty much typical me in a nut shell.

Mom: Having Christmas at your house this year?
Me: Not sure…
Mom: Why?
Me: My house may be kind of a construction zone disaster…
Mom: Why am I not surprised?

So, awhile back my mom’s boyfriend said this about avoiding places, “No, that’s bull crap, you gotta go there and make new memories!”

As for me, when it comes to anything that ever could possibly remind me of my ex, it was a simple HELL NO. Whether it was a song, a place, even a pair of shoes – I AVOIDED it or threw it away or gave it away etc. And I think that’s pretty common.

So, my boyfriend and I started a tradition right away when we got together. A bucket list of things that had previously been ruined for us. A reclaiming. A smudging out of the bad memories and a replacing them with good.

(I have GOT to figure out a better nickname for him here on the blog as boyfriend feels so impersonal… I was considering Hot Guy but that seems even less affectionate… Stay tuned next week for more overthinking by yours truly.)

Along this journey one day I thought of the Pumpkin Party.

A place that I had all but put out of my mind even though it had been MY place that I really loved and looked forward to every year literally since I was a kid.

I looked them up on Facebook and realized that we had literally ONE day – ONE chance to get there this year before they closed for the season. It was crazy how everything seemed to get behind us getting there. Even the weather went from sleeting/raining/snowing to literally giving us ONE perfect fall day of sunny – the one day we needed!

With the love of my life I reclaimed a place I’ve avoided and missed for years because of the biggest mistake of my life.

We had an absolute blast!

Tarah, I am so thankful that you went to the pumpkin party and reclaimed a part of your life that someone else had taken from you. The living room looks great, but I absolutely love your wood shed. We heat with wood and it is so messy.

Hi Carol, yep wood heat is REALLY messy. I heated with wood for a couple of years so that room really was a wood shed but I’m real happy now to have switched to pellets! Thank you so much for coming by!

Laura, very true one thing MN does do is pumpkin patches right! I think its our last hurrah before winter so we party lol I am currently re-reading the Dark Tower Series by Stephen King, it is my absolute favorite so every couple of years I pick them all up again.

I look forward to hearing from you each week! And take it from an old gal who’s seen a few … he is a HOT GUY! (Kind of has a look of Tim Tebow!) Glad to see you’re happy and enjoying things!

I luv reading your blog and seeing all the things that you’ve done or are in the process of doing and you give me some great ideas along the way, but may i please make one suggestion. When you post photos, could you please put a couple empty spaces between the photo’s as they are really hard to focus on, with one running into the next. Especially when some of the photo’s like the ones you posted today, where you’re showing the furniture in a hodge podge. I can’t see where a ceiling ends and a floor begins……maybe its just me. 🙂 have a great day.

Hi Erika, no problem I can definitely start doing that from now on! Thank you for coming by 🙂

You two are absolutely adorable and I think HotGuy suits him to a t!!! Maybe HG for short? The floors look great and can’t wait to see your living room redo.

    • November 25, 2019 at 10:02 am

HG is a good idea! I might have to use that. Thanks!!

I found you months ago looking for DIY dish soap or something and I’m so glad I did. Your story is nothing like mine (I’m a grandma in the city and I’ve never seen snow) but it is like watching a modern Little House on the Prairie, with a huge injection of girl power, play out in real time. Your enthusiasm, positivity and perseverance inspire me so much. As for Hot Guy, just ask him. I don’t think he will mind being objectified a little (do you think McDreamy felt like no one could love him for his mind?) and the name certainly fits! So glad to see that you didn’t nail your heart shut and hole up on the farm with all your projects – that’s pretty much what I thought until just now. That big smile looks good on you. Cheering for you in Houston….

Hi Teresa, yep that’s pretty much what I’ve been doing for the last two years. I was just so DONE with men lol I think it was good though, I really needed that time for me to get over myself and everything. He had to literally come to my house to find me as I have been totally hermiting!

Hi Tara, Just a note to remind you to get some felt under the legs of your livingroom furniture so it doesn’t scratch your beautiful new floors. Also, I agree that the name Hot Guy is perfect, but how about HG for short. Happy Thanksgiving, Claudia

    • November 25, 2019 at 10:02 am

Thanks Claudia, HG is a great idea! That might just be the ticket!

I think “Stud Muffin” would be a great substitute name for the “boyfriend”. That is what I still call Merlyn after almost 54 years of marriage. It works! Thanks for the update!

The first thing I noticed WAS the couch+chair. In those old awful days, you had a couch that was coffee coloured floral, so I has pleased to see the smart grey one! Good luck with the stairs and the rest of the uplift, it will be so clean and smart when you’ve finished that Thanksgiving guests will be ooohing and ahing all over the place. Do you do blinds/drapes or just leave the windows as is? I ask because we don’t have drapes in our living room but we do have roller blinds – we don’t need them, the double glazing works really well, but with the blinds down we feel so cozy in the winter.

Looking foward to seeing the finished room. x

Yep I was SO glad to be rid of that old couch. I absolutely love the new one, I actually ordered it on Amazon! It was light, easy to put together and way way way easier on my floors too. Pretty exciting, it was first new couch purchase 🙂 I have curtains for the big doors, I don’t really need them for privacy but I have considered putting up big drapes for in the winter time, I would think it would help with insulation.

    Hey there,
I was MIA for a bit. Look what I missed! Your floors look great. Also, so glad you’ve found a nice fella. I love the idea of reclaiming the things that were ruined by exes! That is awesome.
