Ten years – My main floor bathroom and hallway

I’ve talked a lot about our main floor bathroom and the very hard decision I made to take space from the living room to move it to a new location. As with all full gut renovations the foot print of the home doesn’t need to remain in any way. And the old location of the bathroom was pretty much impossible. Its previous access was through the living room, around the incredibly dangerous and steep staircase to the second floor and behind the kitchen. The stairs had to be entirely rebuilt and nearly doubled in length, so that killed any access to the original bathroom UNLESS I wanted the bathroom door in the kitchen…

Not only did I certainly NOT want my bathroom in my kitchen it also would have taken a ton of space away from an already small kitchen foot print.

And I didn’t want my main floor bathroom over the peer and beam foundation for fear of its pipes freezing in the winter. So, that left me with only the 500 square foot original home over the basement to work with.

Those restrictions really gave me one choice where it could go and that was in the living room.

So that’s what I did!

It was already a really long room which had a lot of extra, awkward space. But nowadays I’m even more OK that I took from the living room as we just redesigned that space and totally love how it turned out.

With the new location the bathroom also got a private entrance from the new hall I created right along side the two bedrooms on the main floor.

So it all worked out!

I made our main floor bathroom as small as I could while still managing to get a shower, sink and toilet to fit.

This back hall and bathroom were a couple of my last projects when I embarked on the full redesign and repaint of this house in 2017. Leaving them for last was really nice because they were small projects lol.

I got a lot of bang out of them in comparison to the amount of time and money they cost me.

I opted to take the color Rise and Shine (by Clark and Kensington) right through from the living room into the sheetrocked walls of the hall. Nearly half of the hall is the old house siding that I chose to keep so that took a fresh coat of white paint.

You guys know I am not at all shy when it comes to using dark and bold colors but I think a few people thought I was kind of crazy painting such a small space such a dark color but we love it!

Its call Black Current and its by Valspar.

I had a very specific color in mind for this bathroom and this was (unfortunately) the closest I could find after tons of hunting. Now, don’t get me wrong – I still really like it! But it is more purple than I had actually intended…

There were a few “barney” jokes initially but I still think its a bit more elegant than the purple dinosaur lol.

One thing this space proved entirely to me is that tiny spaces don’t need to feel cramped, the right (dark) paint color can take them from feeling tiny to feeling cozy.
