Ah the dreaded popcorn ceilings. I once spent an ungodly amount of hours removing popcorn from all the ceilings in a home I used to own. Messy. Awful. Experience. It was worth it though in the end as it absolutely improved the look of the whole home. I’m sure it won’t surprise anyone whose dealt with them though that we don’t have a single ceiling in this home that’s sheet rock lol. We opted for beadboard ceiling throughout and I remain totally in love with them!

While builders used to claim that popcorn ceilings provide a solution to noise dampening and cover ceiling imperfections, it can be an eyesore, primarily if you’ve had it for a long while. If it has asbestos, it can be potentially dangerous, and you may not want its outdated look, prompting you to remove it. This article outlines six reasons to consider popcorn ceiling removal.

1.   Remove asbestos

If your home was built as late as 1986 (Canada), it’s possible that you might have asbestos. The risks happen when disturbance, or damage to the ceiling results in the asbestos fibers becoming loose and possibly airborne. When inhaled, these tiny fibers don’t decompose and can stay permanently lodged in your lungs, causing inflammation, infection, and soreness, which may lead to mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis, and pleural thickening. This is why you should consider a professional removal service from qualified and experienced field experts like Stipple Removal Ottawa.

2.   Improve lighting

Popcorn ceilings create mini craters that form small shadows, causing less light and making a room gloomy. This is because the bumpy surface Absorbs the light rather than reflecting it. Removing the popcorn ceiling eliminates the shadows and ensures the light bounces off a flat surface, covering more room. Improved lighting adds ambiance to a room and makes it easier to set a room’s mood with natural or artificial lighting without fighting any shadows.

3.   Enhance aesthetics

Popcorn ceilings were popular and widely adopted back in the day. Unless you want your home to have a vintage look, having these ceilings at this time and age doesn’t suit a modern home, making it look dated. This is because interior design has since evolved, creating more modern ceiling designs. Removing a popcorn ceiling and replacing it with a modern one can help enhance your home’s aesthetics.

4.   Ensure cleaner ceilings

Popcorn ceilings are prone to dust, and since white is the primary color of the majority of them, hiding dirt can be challenging. This makes it difficult to clean these ceilings, resulting in dirt and dust accumulating and darkening them. In addition, dirt will have lesser sticking power if a ceiling doesn’t attract or accommodate dust. Scraping off or covering the popcorn ceiling with drywall allows you more control if you want to keep your ceiling clean.

Popcorn ceilings conceal the imperfections under them. However, stains will show more prominently if it’s under a water-leaking room. Regrettably, there’s not much you can do to conceal the water patch. Nonetheless, removing the entire ceiling can help solve the issue.

5.   Get rid of discoloration

Popcorn ceilings become discolored over time. While you can repaint the whole ceiling, the painting job is more complex than a standard ceiling. This leaves with the popcorn ceiling removal option, which can be advantageous in the long run as it gets rid of the mess entirely.

6.   Ceiling disintegration

Popcorn ceilings can disintegrate with time, resulting in an unsightly look because it flakes and falls over things in your home and could damage them if you aren’t careful. Since the flakes off the ceiling can damage surfaces in your home, removing the popcorn can be the best preventive option.
