I think some people may not be entirely bothered by the stress of moving but I think the majority of us look back at it as something we NEVER want to do again if we can help it lol. Of course for most of us that is simply not going to be possible throughout our lifetimes. In fact most adults move over eleven times! I lived between two homes once but, all in, I’ve only ever actually moved twice to which I am very grateful for. This is our “forever” home as Lodi and I have no intention of going anywhere until well after retirement something we are both very relieved by.

Moving house is at the top of the list of the most stressful things to do for many of us. It’s exciting to relocate and start life in a new home, but it can be stressful organizing all your possessions and figuring out how to get everything from A to B. If you’ve found your dream home, or you’ve sold your house and you’re gearing up to move into a rental property, here are some simple steps for your most seamless move yet.

Have a clear-out

The first thing to do when you’re moving house and you’re ready to start packing your belongings is to have a clear-out. Many of us are guilty of hanging onto things we never use or don’t even want because we haven’t got around to decluttering or spring cleaning. Moving house is an ideal opportunity to go through each room and get rid of anything you don’t want to take to your new home. If there are items in good condition, create separate piles to donate to charity or sell.

Start packing early

Unless you move unexpectedly, and you have a matter of days to get sorted, it’s usually possible to pack your house up over the course of weeks or even months. Start packing as soon as possible to prevent stress as your moving date looms. You can get your attic and basement organized, pack up your garage and sort out your closets, for example. If it’s summer and you’re not going to need winter clothes, pack coats, hats and thick sweaters and winter sports equipment. As you get closer to the move, you can add belongings you won’t use in the days or weeks before you bid farewell to your home. Investigate storage options

If you are downsizing, or you are having renovation work done at your new property, it’s a brilliant idea to investigate storage options. Hiring a storage unit will enable you to keep your possessions safe if you don’t have much space in your new home or your home won’t be fully functional for a few weeks or months. Explore sites like www.findselfstorage.com, compare quotes and think about your requirements. You may need to look for specialist services if you have valuable or very large items, for example. It’s also important to check accessibility. Some companies offer 24-hour access.

Get help

Moving house takes time and effort. If you have a large house, or you’re moving on your own, get help. You can hire removal firms that offer packing and unpacking services or ask friends and family to lend a hand. They may be able to help you pack your stuff or free up time by offering to look after your kids while you pack or tie up loose ends, for example.

Label every box

One of the simplest and most effective ways to make your life easier when you move house is to label every box. Make sure every single box or bag you pack is labeled with the contents and the proposed location in your new house. If you’re moving endless boxes, being able to put each one in the right room and find specific items quickly will help reduce stress and make unpacking a breeze. It’s also beneficial to pack an overnight bag of essentials for the first day in your new home.
