The average American will spend thirty six years in bed so, at least in my opinion, we deserve the right mattress for all that time. I think at this point I’ve lectured everyone I know on how important their bed is! I may only be in my early thirties but I’m also riddled with sports injuries. If I didn’t have a decent bed (and pillow) I would barely be able to walk in the morning and the ensuing migraines would literally make it almost impossible for me to function. When anyone mentions how sore their back is in my company (or how bad their headaches have gotten) my first question is ALWAYS: How old is your mattress? What kind is it? What kind of pillow do you have?

Most people don’t realize that truly debilitating migraines can be entirely caused by just a crappy pillow! But we don’t have to spend a fortune either. My own pillow is from Walmart and my mattress I purchased off of Amazon. Both are what I call “tempurpedic knock offs” but they work great for me!

As we mature, we gain an understanding of putting up with the aches and pains of life. Although we may avoid major chronic health conditions and injuries, we likely feel quite stiff every now and then. Well, we think to ourselves that it’s okay, that is just a part of getting older.

However, the complication with this thinking is that it sometimes impedes us from taking the required steps that could aid us in improving our health after sixty. And it is particularly true with regards to sleep.

The truth is, insufficient sleep isn’t an unavoidable part of aging. For any adult, getting the correct bed is a quintessential decision. For a little help, we will walk you through how to choose the right mattress for your aging body. So, take a read!

Necessity or Luxury?

There’s no doubt that controlling and overseeing your budget as you get older becomes more challenging. It’s particularly true for those people who work as a part-timer or lives on a pension. In return, the purchasing patterns are likely to change from luxuries to necessities.

This change in our purchasing patterns is extremely rational. But the only dilemma comes when we jumble the two categories. For instance, a person insisting on buying a car, even if they hardly use it.

We’re implying that good sleep isn’t a luxury. Thus, you might want to reprioritize the most crucial and essential piece of furniture in your home, which is your mattress. As such, how would you even know when you need a new mattress?

To answer that question, you need to pay attention to your body. Do you wake up sore and stiff? Do you suffer from lower back pain? Is your mattress at least ten years old? If yes, then it might be worth to consider buying a new mattress.

In recent years, memory foam mattresses have, for the most part, become more and more popular. This mattress type has a lot of features that would be of interest to seniors. Memory foam mattresses do an excellent job of distributing your weight evenly.

It helps to lessen pressure points and might keep you from waking up your partner. Furthermore, this mattress type can be warmer. Thus, if you experience night sweats, then memory foam mattresses might not be the ideal option.

    I can testify to the comfort of the Purple mattress! We bought ours almost a year ago. We bought the split king so we can position the bed independently. My HH is a stomach sleeper, I used to be a side sleeper.

    I have fibromyalgia that gives me all over pain with hot spots on my upper arms, shoulders, and sides of my hips and osteoarthritis of my hips, knees and spine. After sleeping upright in a recliner for 6 months, we decided to give it a try. I can’t tell you the relief I get from sleeping in the zero-g setting. It’s wonderful to sleep next to my HH of 35 years!

    It is worth every penny! I also love the purple sheets. Having chronically dry heels, it’s a joy and a comfort to not have them catch on the knit sheets. I also love the weight of the sheets. Keeps me cool in the summer and toasty warm in the winter!

    I like that you said that good sleep is not a luxury. My husband has gained weight and our mattress is very old. He wakes up tired, so I think it is time to get a new one.
