Silicone pot lids because they take up almost no space. You all may have noticed I’ve been on a bit of a war path lately when it comes to purging crap we don’t need / use. It started in our workshop and has moved right on to the entire second floor master suite. In the meantime I’ve been getting more and more annoyed with the two lower cabinets in our kitchen. We only have two (though they are HUGE) one is to the left of the stove and the other is right across from it.
I helped the cabinet to the left of the stove out considerably by moving the two big crock pots (that I rarely use) up into the top of one of our upper cabinets.
What came down from the upper cabinet was all of our bowls, Tupperware etc. which we use often so they replaced the crock pots in the lower cabinet.
Browsing Amazon one day I ran into something that really intrigued me.
Silicone is making a huge statement in the kitchen these days. (I’m still in love with these adorable silicone baking cups.)
At $40 it wasn’t exactly a “frugal” decision of me to purchase them but the idea of how little space they would take up (compared to all the pot lids in the cabinet) made me take the plunge!
That was about 6 months ago and do you know how many times since I’ve used one of the actual lids that came with our pots and pans? ZERO TIMES.
To be fair I don’t use lids very often anyway but, every single time, I just grab one of our silicone pot lids and slap it on there. When I’m done I wash it quick by hand and throw it back in the cabinet.
(They are dishwasher safe.)
It was several years ago when I read a blog post about kitchen organizing that offered some advice that made far too much sense.
It was one of those, “OMG no kidding!” moments for me.
The advice was to pull out every single pot and pan in your kitchen and then only put away the pots and pans that you can actually remember using in the last year.
Though I have at least actually USED all of our pots and pans at some point – that is absolutely not true of the lids…
With the silicone pot lids taking up almost no space I grabbed a box and emptied out the top shelf of one of our big cabinets of all of our pot and pan lids. And then I moved on to all of our pots and pans.
Lodi got me this stainless steel pot with a built in strainer and steamer as an early Xmas present – I would have had to have waited for Xmas except I accidentally opened the box lol It meant I could finally donate a dented pot that I’ve been needing to replace forever.
I also got this awesome new fry pan for Xmas so I ditched my two ancient ones as well.
With the top shelf no longer filled with unused pot lids I finally have a place for all of our baking dishes. Up they go, leaving a lot more room in the bottom of the cabinet! I did pause here because do we really need FIVE glass baking dishes?
No. We Don’t. So into the donate box two of the five went.
With that done and my pots, baking dishes and pans fitting much better I turned my attention to the cabinet by the stove again.
Its been bugging me that we have SO MANY glass bowls.
(I love that one little purchase of silicone pot lids spurned me to make our entire kitchen better!)
I kept two of every size and still have three to donate! We have very little Tupperware because honestly we use very few storage containers.
If we have leftovers, I just throw it, still in the pan, into the refrigerator… a long time ago it dawned on me how silly it seemed to dirty another container… So I literally haven’t used Tupperware for leftovers since then.
So I ditched a few more of them too!
Love, love, love those silicone lids .. I added them to my Amazon wish list .. I wish I had your willpower purging cabinets .. I may just have to box some of the pans and bowls and see if I use them in a year or so ..
Judy that’s an awesome idea!
