Spray painting out our garage bench and cabinets the way you’re NOT supposed to do it. Ok well I guess painting is painting and a wrong or right way just depends on what kind of results you’re looking for. But there is definitely a BETTER way when it comes to cabinets that guarantees the best possible result. I did not do that here lol but I still think they turned out great so it’ll just be our little secret that I didn’t do it the “right” way.

What is the right way? That would have been for me to remove the doors, thoroughly clean them and the bases, lightly sand everything, clean everything again and THEN paint them.

Besides some cleaning I didn’t do any of that before spray painting them.

Call me lazy lol

I have no regrets when it comes to the cabinets.

I do have regrets however when it came to the work bench which I absolutely should have just hand painted instead of spray painting.

I wanted a really durable finish on the top, so that took several coats by hand and then I just went ahead and went over the whole thing with a brush anyway.

It ended up feeling like a waste of spray paint but whatever.

I picked up some plastic and 9 cans of gloss black Rustoleum and got to work spray painting one night after work.

I did two coats on the cabinets with their doors closed initially and then propped the doors open with screws before they dried and then sprayed on a couple more coats.

I chose Rustoleum for the same reason I ALWAYS choose Rustoleum and I know I mention it here on the blog every time.

Its oil based so it provides a much more durable finish than water based paint and requires a lot less coats.

However it does take a long time to dry, it will not wash out of anything and the only way to get it off of your skin is to use paint thinner.

It also really stinks.

I wore a mask when I did this and cracked the garage doors open and still took several breaks because YUCKY.

I tried to find my handy dandy spray can top thingy to save my hands but it seems to be all kinds of gone. Had I known I would have picked one up.

And that’s a good tip.

If you know you’re going to be doing a lot of spray painting they’re only a few bucks and will really save your fingers, thumbs, forearms etc.

It was three days before I didn’t hurt from the elbows down after this.

I could have used our electric spray gun (which is awesome btw) but I didn’t want to risk gumming it up with oil based paint.

And again, me being lazy, I also didn’t want to CLEAN oil based paint out of it.

A couple of days later I removed the screws from the cabinets and used a little caulk to fill in the holes.

Both the cabinets and the bench were free for us actually. Years ago my brother purchased a house to flip and gave me all of the kitchen cabinets.

Several went to our basement kitchen and the rest are these here.

Feeling pretty thrilled with the results – what a dress up from what they USED to look like!

I purchased some new hardware for the cabinets too. Time to install!
