New Swivel Grill for our stone fire pit! When I came home for good MANY years ago one thing I did just for newly single me was buy some camping gear. I’ve always LOVED camping and when I was going back and forth working and living in two different states I just never got the chance. So, home for good, I spent a little bit of money on myself and it was SO MUCH FUN. I bought a tent, a blow up mattress, a camping chair, a cast iron pan, a coffee pot and a few other essentials and I totally took myself camping. It was a tradition of mine for many years to go out alone and I’ll never forget how fun and liberating that was for twenty-something me.
Its probably not all that unique for state parks but where I always went camping they had these really nice camping spots with a picnic table and a steel fire ring with a swivel grill.
So, with our brand new lower deck and stone fire pit complete I asked Lodi if he thought it might be a good addition!
My biggest worry, honestly, was whether or not we would even use it very much but I went looking around Amazon for a swivel grill anyway.
This is the one I decided to order because I could not believe how inexpensive it was combined with a lot of really good reviews.
One thing I will say I noticed right away – ITS VERY STURDY. Much sturdier than I was expecting with a price tag of less than $50!
Our fire ring is much too deep to be able to put the new grill on the outside but to putting it on the inside meant pounding the stake down between our steel ring and the concrete we poured when we built the pit.
Regarding fire pits, remember there are rules to setting one up in your home. First, it must be 10 – 25 feet away from the house and flammable material. Ignoring this crucial rule increases the risk of a fire. However, if, despite all the caution, you, unfortunately, experience damage due to fire, don’t hesitate to hire fire restoration services immediately. Remember to prioritize safety before, during, and after the installation of your new grill.
Oh hindsight! GRRRR. I should have installed it when I built the pit! Even more infuriating was that I had the grill when I built the pit lol I just didn’t think about it at the time!
Regardless, we made it work.
We used a sledgehammer and pounded the swivel grill stake between the ring and the concrete and, though it did bend the ring out a little, we both think it looks just fine.
I hadn’t planned on writing a post just devoted to this little grill but OMG you guys I love it so much!
I promised Lodi my favorite camping “supper” one night that included my little camping cast iron pan (filled with bacon), my old coffee pot making coffee (with the addition of a little butterscotch schnapps for dessert), sweet corn, campfire potatoes (recipe here though I generally don’t add cheese) and steaks I picked up at our local market.
And now I’ve come to realize that maybe it wasn’t the camping I loved so much but the food! There really is nothing like the flavor of a dinner cooked over an open fire.
We use the grill nearly every time we have a bon fire now but one thing our first dinner showed us is how desperately we need some tables down here.
Back to the drawing board for me!
Holy COW!!! I just bought a fire ring and I was thinking about how to make a grill for it and then this pops up not 24 hours later! You’re so smart…😉
We totally LOVE ours!
