A little sign my Grandma Painted Forty Years Ago

Flash back to 1986 the year I was born my parents planted five acres of blueberry plants with the plan to open a you-pick blueberry farm. The blueberries are still there purchased and now operated by my brother’s mother-in-law. As a teenager I worked the patch for several years. Forty years ago my Grandparents (who owned this farm before me) had just retired from farming and milking and my Grandma loved to paint. She hand painted dozens of signs for the patch and this is one of the last ones that remains so, of course, I will keep it forever!

I mentioned in one of my last blog posts that I put in a little kitchen garden right by my front step this spring. I loved it! I was able to transplant just about every type of perennial flower of my grandma’s into it so they won’t be lost and will keep on blooming for years. Besides the flowers though I finally got some fresh herbs!

I’ve been dabbling in just about every type of herb storing since they started growing. I’ve frozen them as is and I tried freezing them in oil as well. But I really just wanted to dry them because that’s how I use herbs the most. So, I needed an herb drying rack! At work I have these medium sized binder clips that I bought a box of.

They’re very handy! I started working on the idea that maybe I could hang them off of screws but what I really needed was a neat old piece of wood to make this really work. I headed out the barn because I thought of the perfect old sign that I had spotted out there! I added screws spaced out along the bottom of it to hang the binder clips on and I was in business!

It then dawned on me that this would be a great rack for just about anything! I thought pictures would work on it, children’s artwork, even hats for a great hat rack! I like how the clips aren’t attached at all so I can get all my herbs ready and then clip them and then hang them. It was such a simple project but sometimes those work out the best! I hung it up in my office and I just LOVE how it smells in there now!

Do you store and grow your own fresh herbs?
