Throwing back to my first Master Bathroom Reveal

As usual with these throwback posts I’m just so glad that I’ve had this blog over the last ten years. Its really been an amazing diary for me. So much of all of this I would have just forgot. I had completely forgotten about those fun canvas art pieces I made one night with my best friend. I had those for years before moving on to something different in this space. I had also forgotten about the pipe I used for the shelf of here before replacing it was something a little “fancier” for the space. The galvanized pipe hardware got another home in basement! Here’s what the bathroom looks like now.

A Master Bathroom Retreat, my gift to myself! The total amount of months it took me to complete my renovation was fifteen. I spent almost every day after work at the house, almost every weekend and it just about killed me.

Going into the renovation I knew it would be one of the hardest things I had ever done but also, what I wanted to do more then anything I had ever wanted to achieve in my entire life. This master bathroom was my treat to myself. The double slipper tub (*swoon*) was the one splurge I gave myself for all of my work and I have never regretted it!

As far as the design of my second floor master suite it all starts with the passing of my other Grandma: Eleonora. I’ve mentioned her a couple of times along the way in my Before and after of Eleonora’s Rocker and Eleonora’s buffet/my entertainment center.

You’ve also probably heard me mention my incredible and undeniably sexy white leather tufted hassock (check out the post about my Master Closet to see it in action!) It was in Eleonora’s attic room for my whole life as far as I can remember and it was such an incredible gift my family gave me when I was able to bring it home.

This was the smaller of the two bedrooms on the second floor (smaller because the staircase takes space from this room and not the other) it was once my mother’s bedroom after her parents built a bedroom downstairs for them when she was a teenager.

My aunt had the room across the hall that became my Master Bedroom. This room was absolutely ideal as both my master closet and my master bathroom.

I struggled and struggled and struggled with the design of this room(s). It first was just a giant master bathroom and then that seemed like a lot of space when I really a walk in closet. Then, it was my master bathroom with a closet in it and I didn’t like that at all.

What I really wanted was a master closet with the vanity in it and then all the rest of the bathroom in the next room. I never managed to get it done. So, it is a walk through closet to the bathroom.

With the slanted walls there was very little area to actually have a shower so having it in the center of the whole old bedroom (across from the vanity) was the only choice. I didn’t want plumbing on exterior walls but, in the end, I just didn’t have any choice and I think the bathroom vanity looks like it is exactly where it belongs. So, I bet you want to hear about the tub huh? Yeah, it is my pride and joy 🙂 Of the hundreds upon hundreds of hours I put into this house in the renovation I gave myself this one splurge. A lot of folks wouldn’t call it a fortune (I purchased the tub on sale at Menards for $599) but to me it was an extreme indulgence.

However, I literally thought about slipping into this tub on a daily basis and it became a part of my working mantra to keep me going throughout the entire house renovation. It is wonderful and I am so glad I got it for us! I take a bath at least once a week now and I wouldn’t live without a big tub again.

So, the tub faucet I saved some money on, I got it for $70 at my local fleet store and it is the exact same faucet as my kitchen faucet because (brace yourselves) it is a kitchen faucet. I don’t think it looks like a kitchen faucet much at all though, in fact I think it looks like it belongs there and nobody has ever questioned it. Pedestal tub faucets start at around $200 and run into the thousands of dollars so the choice of this faucet was a bit of a no brainer for me. There is also one major advantage to it being a kitchen faucet that I did not anticipate: the faucet swivels completely out of the way and I LOVE that.

See that cute little magazine rack beside the tub and commode? It was in my Grandparents’ living room for years (now my Living Room) and I ended up spray painting it black and using it as an end table in my Master Bedroom for lack of better alternatives before we moved in here even though it was way too short and didn’t look right/really work at all.

It found its new home here and it is exactly where it belongs. With its cedar lined storage cubby I have a place for girly storage and we actually use it as a magazine rack as well and, of course, it is the perfect perch for my wine glass when I take a bath and who knew a table lamp would be great in a bathroom? Well, it is and this little magazine rack made it all possible.

I love my vessel sink! Not everyone likes them (I’ve read some horror stories online) they are definitely different then what I was used to! I splurged on this one and the faucet but I had always wanted a vessel sink.

So far, I’m extremely happy with it and find I am a lot less “splashy” and a lot cleaner. The vanity I left really high as well so I don’t have to bend over very far to use it and I love that.

The only real gripe I’ve ever found about the entire bathroom is that the buffet is very deep, meaning that leaning in to get close enough to the mirror for certain bathroom activities is kinda impossible. I got a little handheld mirror and: problem solved! I love the deeper buffet I used for a vanity here though because I have SO much storage!

In the end my second floor master suite is my very favorite place in the entire house. As always guys, thank you so much for all of your support and shares! See you next time!
