Throwing back to my Master Closet

A throwback post the first reveal of our master closet from March 2016! Over the years one thing has remained for certain for me, I love I have so much hanging space for my clothes! It definitely makes me feels spoiled lol. I saw a little trick online for using a belt hanger for hanging jeans and my gosh I don’t know how I ever lived without being able to hang my jeans before. I just hang them by a belt loop and all of my jeans are right at hand and take up almost no space at all in my closet. (This is the hanger if you want to check it out.) I also use the same hanger for all of my tank tops, camis etc too.

Over the years I’ve made some furniture changes in here. My Grandma’s rocking chair replaced the hassock which went to the end of our bed.

I brought in my grandparents’ old wash stand for the few clothes that I can’t hang.

And Lodi ended up with the big ladder for his own convenient rack in the master closet. I added hooks so he has a place now to hang all of his baseball hats and belts!

My wonderful walk through master closet!

As far as the design of this whole floor goes it all started with the passing of my other Grandma: Eleonora. You’ve seen her mentioned a couple of times here along the way in my Before & After of Eleonora’s Rocker and Eleonora’s buffet.

You’ve also probably heard me mention my awesome white leather tufted hassock.

It was in Eleonora’s attic for my whole life so when they told us grand kids that we could choose something to keep, I was so glad I could keep it for the rest of my life! Every morning I think of her when I see it.

This was such a creepy spot when I started this renovation!

Forty years ago this second floor was virtually abandoned when my grandparents’ two girls grew up and moved out. Check out the before pictures of the day I started. I was never more dirty then the day I gutted this room and my mom helped me haul all the dirt, ancient insulation and plaster and lath out of here. (Totally worth it for such a big closet though!)

This was the smaller of the two bedrooms on the second floor (smaller because the staircase takes space from this room and not the other) it was once my mother’s room after her parents built a bedroom downstairs for them when she was a teenager.

My aunt had the room across the hall that became my Master Bedroom. I struggled and struggled and struggled with the design of this closet. I first made the whole room just a big bathroom but that seemed like a lot of wasted space when I really wanted a big closet too.

Then, it was a bathroom with a closet in it and I didn’t like that at all. What I really wanted was a closet with the vanity in it and then all the rest of the bathroom in the next room. I never managed to get it done. So, it is a “walk-through” closet!

Doing a hanging barn door here made so much sense for me. I almost never use it (like ever) but it doubles as “art” for me because I think its just beautiful. Even better it was my grandparents’ wood shed door so it also carries a ton of sentiment for me too! (Check out how I made my barn door here.)

I did just a basic rod across the whole wall and it almost houses all of my clothes! I’m even hanging up most of my jeans too 🙂 From there is one of my favorite things in the whole world, my Grandma Eleonora’s white leather tufted hassock that started the entire design of my Master Suite!

From there – isn’t my ladder cool? I was a little apprehensive about the whole ladder idea but, I saw it on Pinterest (just like everyone else lol) and I have never EVER had a decent place to keep my very-infrequently-used-high-heals, scarfs and wraps and I had the perfect ancient ladder of my Grandpa’s that would have been thrown away otherwise. Surely at thirty years old, I should be able to part with my one of my last teddy bears from my child hood… probably not – Mr. Minky probably will be with me for another thirty years…

Since this post came out I splurged and replaced all of my plastic and wire hangers with velvet wrapped hangers and I’m so mad I didn’t do it sooner. No more sweaters falling off of hangers etc. And it only cost me about $50. Totally worth it!
