Throwing back to when I scored a Rocking Chair at an Estate Sale

Not everything is built to last and I haven’t been totally surprised that I don’t always still have the pieces from these throw back posts. That’s not the case with this big old rocking chair though. I’ve really grown to love it over the years and its currently back upstairs in my master bedroom where it feels like it belongs. Its sturdy. It was absolutely built to last and I love how handsome it became with the coat of sleek black paint I gave it.

It is large and solid and, with a blanket thrown over it, its surprisingly comfortable. Actually, come to think about it, it is the most comfortable rocker I have and its the only one I purchased. The other four were all heirlooms.

This rocker has traveled all over the house and may end up again in my living room or even in my basement at some point.

But it really feels like it belongs upstairs in my master though.

I scored at an estate sale a while back, I picked up one rocking chair, another rocking chair with a matching couch, two end tables and a coffee table for only $100 and, as you might imagine, I had big plans for all of it! (You can read my post about when I picked them up here.)

I already completed the two end tables awhile back and I’m very happy to report that I still love them in my living room! Two end tables get a sweet country makeover. This last weekend I spent the ENTIRE day Saturday working on the painted rocking chair and the matching chair and couch and the coffee table.

I had set out Saturday to get the painted rocking chair finished but as soon as I set foot in my garage, dressed in my work clothes and all ready to go, my heart sank and I called myself several four letter words. The rocking chair needed some wood putty fixes and fills in a couple of places and wood putty takes a VERY long time to dry. Dangnabit! Well, I wouldn’t be getting that painted rocking chair done that Saturday now would I!?

Fortunately, like any good DIYer, there were other projects I could work on (isn’t there always?) So I got to work on the matching couch, chair and coffee table. Six hours later and they had two coats of primer, three coats of paint and I was ready to NEVER see my garage or a paint brush again. Someday I’m going to buy myself a paint sprayer and wonder forever why I hadn’t bought it SO MUCH sooner!

But I digress, I don’t own a paint sprayer, I own hands and paint brushes. With the promise to spend all day Sunday with my hubby I may have gotten a lot done but NONE of it was finished and one project I wanted to get done last weekend had nothing but a little wood putty on it! So, I took yesterday (Monday) off and tackled this old rocking chair 🙂

I hate to admit that a lot of my paint choices are based on what I have on hand. (Paint is expensive!) I happened to have an almost-full can of black Rustoleum flat paint left over from painting my interior doors so I grabbed it for this painted rocking chair. The chair itself was sturdy and in really good shape but it needed a makeover BADLY. I sanded the entire chair down and got to painting.

The thing is about oil based paints like Rustoleum they take a LONG time to dry. So, between coats on this painted rocking chair I touched up the entire matching chair, couch and coffee table set then put two coats of exterior sealant on it. Now, all I need to do is buy cushions and I’ll be able to call it done and show you guys my new outdoor furniture set!!

I put a coat of exterior poly on this chair after putting on three coats of the black Rustoleum paint on it. I wanted it to be indoor/outdoor. I was nervous going into this actually. This is my very first project bought entirely on the plan to give it a makeover and sell it! I’m excited and I’m nervous, I keep thinking, “What if it doesn’t sell?!” But, like everything, I shall see how it goes 🙂

I think it turned out really stunning and I think it would work in just about any home or porch whether for a nursery or just a place to rock with a morning cup of coffee or tea. This is truly the first step I’m taking toward my dream of refinishing furniture for a living, it is a very long term goal, but it is exciting for me to take the first step even if it is only a little one!

If you saw my Inspiration Board on Stunning Rocking Chairs then you know how much I drooled over a couple of them painted in black! I’m almost torn to sell this painted rocking chair, it sure turned out puuurrrty 🙂
